I'll never play a MMORPG'er like this again until they turn the switch off the servers. But it's free anyway: https://store.steampowered.com/app/836620/Black_Desert/?curator_clanid=4777282&utm_source=SteamDB

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

https://www.gog.com/game/shadow_warrior_complete

This game has been free for a while actually, it went permanently free since the preorder of SW2. I hadn't bothered with it though because I had played it in DOS/DOSBox back in the day and wanted to use a source-port similar to EDuke32, but while there were a couple of ports they all had issues and/or were abandoned after a while.

Well it turns out the EDuke32 folks were working on their own engine variant called VoidSW, and it appears that it entered public beta at some point in the sysnthesis builds of EDuke32: http://dukeworld.duke4.net/eduke32/synthesis/. All you need to do is downloaded the latest build (which will have a new voidsw.exe binary), dump the Shadow Warrior files into the directory you've extracted the build into (after installing the GOG game somewhere), and run it.

It's not perfect (some issues with the menu for me), but it feels pretty robust and with the EDuke32 people working on it, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that it works well.

A word of warning, Agent Denton. This was a simulated experience; real LAMs will not be so forgiving.

I tried Sim Tower. Pretty slow on my Raspberry Pi 4, but I imagine js-dos (Dosbox running in a web browser) might be playable on other systems. It might need manual configuration to raise the cycles.

That looks like a pirate/illicit site, so I'm not sure if you're allowed to post that here. Then again, Internet Archive has a similar abandonware collection that uses js-dos: https://archive.org/details/softwarelibrary_msdos_games

Zardy's Maze

7br2jSg.png

Zardy's Maze is an extremely challenging horror game where you must enter a corn maze in the dead of night. Your goal? Cut down the giant plants that have started to grow there. Equipped with a flashlight and an axe (they do not serve you as a weapon, stealth rules, and run too), you must brave the unknown... and survive as much as possible 😈

Minimum

SO: Windows 10
CPU: 64-bit system, 2.5 GHz
RAM: 4 GB
Graphics: Graphics card with DX10 (shader model 4.0) capabilities
HD: 200 MB free

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1484800/Zardys_Maze/

Not very complex graphics, almost comic style, but scares of the good ones

You can get S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat for free on GOG if you follow the directions. You need to create an account on "Gamivo.com", uncheck the "customer protection program" before adding to cart, and enter the coupon code. And complete a bunch of captchas on GOG to redeem the code for some reason.

A previous deal on the same site gave the entire trilogy for $1, but for the free deal you don't need to enter in any credit card info or pay a measly cent:

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
