Lovecraftian Horror?

TDM is quite well suited to capturing a Lovecraftian theme, owed to its light & shadows, cautious gameplay and relative ease of implementing custom effects and scripts. My Down by the Riverside was consciously inspired by a Lovecraft story, and there are most likely a few other missions too that share this theme.

Where I'd like to make a distinction, though, is between recreating the theme and actually putting his tentacle monsters into a mission. Those monsters belong to a different universe, and to me would feel as out of place in a TDM mission as i.e. a Catholic priest or an Alien.

The approach I'd endorse, therefore, would be to take the unique atmosphere of his settings and come up with something original and suited for TDM with which to populate the mission. That 'something' doesn't necessarily need to be a monster, it can also be a certain kind of human or a malevolent ghost, for instance.

I feel as if it would be okay to have SOME Lovecraftian enemies, or evidence of something Lovecraftian having been there, at least. Something to really amp up the horror aspect. Nyalathotep in Thief The Dark Mproject appeared as a statue, at least. Perhaps something like oozing green slime leading to a well, an evil looking spellbook bound in human flesh, or inbred backwoods folk doing strange rituals at ancient stone hedges that even the pagans kept away from.

I am not sure, which statue you refer to, but I doubt that it was really meant to be a depiction of Nyalathotep, as Thief has no other examples of Lovecraftian horrors. So I think this is only coincidental. I agree with Dragofer that TDM is very well suited for glum creeping horrors and the scenarios you mentioned in the quoted post are very good examples on how to implement it wihtout having to resort to show (and as a consequence model and animate) the actual monstrosities.

I also always liked the madness/horror themes of Edgar Allen Poe. I think his stories are also quite suitable for the TDM setting.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
