Lair of the clockwork god

It's that time of the year where I come here to recommend a game that really blew my mind and I wish more people would play it.

Lair of the clockwork god on Steam

This is from the creators of Ben there Dan that and Time gentlemen, please. Lair of the clockwork god is, at its core, a point and click adventure game. Except the gimmick is that it's also a platformer. You can control either character at any time, one wants to be a platformer the other is still clinging to the point and click genre.

OK, so the gimmick is just a hook and it fades to the background quickly; that's not why I recommend it, I recommend it because the game itself is just utterly brilliant and hilarious. It made me laugh out loud many times. And the cleverness of the puzzles made my jaw drop many times. It's hard to take someone's word for it, but it's harder to give examples without spoiling the game.

It was launched recently but I already think it has been criminally overlooked and underrated.

No review can really do this game justice. It is outrageously clever. Either the review will sell the game short or it will spoil its best bits, for reasons that only become evident after you play the game.

@Diego

While waiting for final external contribution before I start optimizing/beta testing my next mission and having nothing else to do (except for staying at home and doing tedious household chores interrupted only by spotaneous running or drinking sessions), I have decided to follow your recommendation and thus will do something  I haven't done till now:

I will create a steam account to get this game!

Hold your breath and stay tuned for the shocking experiences I will share with you guys! :)

Update:

Started playing ca. 2 hours ago.

I have finished the prologue and a few minutes ago a talkable elevator said "Good luck, idiots"  to my two lads. :)

I must say: I love it! Thank your for this recommendation.

The J/R sequences are not too complicated and most of the puzzles have been quite logical (till now). I never made good experiences with P&C in the 80ies and 90ies (Manic Mansion, Monkey Island Series), thus this game is some sort of revelation for me.

The dialogues are great, especially when it comes to comparing gameplay technology over the decades.

The soundtrack is great, too. The themes used till now provide for seriousness and the track played in the area with the "banging door" reminds me on David Bowie's 1995 album "Outside". A good reference with respect to the "apocalyptcial" circumstances.

Right, let met return to my guys and do some more serious combining....er,I mean "crafting", of course. :)

I don't get Steam's rating system, for this game you see:

Recent Reviews:
Very Positive (62)
All Reviews:
Very Positive (275)

But if you mouse over those ratings, you'll see that for the Recent Reviews (last 30 days) it's 100% Positive, and the All Reviews part shows 99% Positive.
WTF Steam? How can 95% and higher be Overwhelmingly Positive but 100% is Very Positive?????
I see this all the time with Indie games or maybe it's just newer games.

If you look at Dead Cells on the store page, you'll see:

RECENT REVIEWS:
Overwhelmingly Positive (2,009)
ALL REVIEWS:
Overwhelmingly Positive (42,079)

And those values are 97% and 96% respectively.

So, how in the hell is 96% a higher value than 100%?

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

I think it might also have to do with the total number of reviews? 96% positive of 42,079 is more statistically significant than 99% of 275, and that might be one way to express that to a certain extent.

Yes.

But you may never get to 40,000 positive reviews if you're an indie game, especially a niche one. So you're 100% positive review only shows up at Very Positive in the search results but it's really Overwhelmingly Positive.

I've been bit by this before when searching indie games on steam but only in the overwhelmingly positive category. Now I know I missed a bunch of great games.

Statistics like that literaly are designed to catch the mainstream's flavor. So if you are searching for something wich isn't mainstream-flavored they are a lot less useful. Read some randomly chosen reviews wich don't hate or cheer and ignore the scores.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
