OS X Install "Bad CPU type in executable"

Recommended Posts

Thanks for this great project. I really enjoyed playing Thief 2 back in the day.

I'm following the OS X installation instructions here:

https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Installer_and_Manual_Installation#Installing_TDM_on_Mac_OS.2C_version_2.05

When I get to step 11, i get this error message:

-bash: ./tdm_update.macosx: Bad CPU type in executable

I was wondering if anyone has encountered this error and has a workaround or solution. I really appreciate any assistance!

dont know howto solve it.
but you dont want to run an old version of TDM.
the easiest method to run recent versions of TDM on mac os, is run the TDM Windows version using Playonmac on mac os.

see following posts for instructions:

So I can't play a 32 bit game on a 64 bit OS?

In windows you certainly can, I still play plenty of 32 bits software in my 64bits windows 10 just fine, some from 20 years ago and even tho I never used a mac, I don't see any real reason for why MacOS 64bits wouldn't support 32bits apps, to me that could only be true, if Apple themselves disabled that support, like Microsoft disabled support for 16bits programs.

mee too, but this mac os user is not a windows user.

you dont want to run tdm on a vm.

To me (and other TDM players on mac os) the easiest and preferred way to run TDM on a mac, is running the Windows version of TDM on WINE on Mac OS.
(playonmac is a frontend for this)
This because there are people who dont want/unexperienced to create a recent/universal-version mac os TDM binary for it.

As an open source community project, I believe, it's the MacOS users who are supposed to maintain their port

No offence, @daedalus, but isn't it natural to expect this situation when there's literally zero contribution to TDM from the proud think different crowd?

Heck, we even have received a compile patch PR for the extra-rare obscure Elbrus platform. MacOS? Nah!

Quid pro quo

As a Mac (and multi-) OS user, i just want to mention that did my part of the contribution to the mac part of TDM (and other os'ses):
I dont program stuff on mac os, but for TDM I "scripted" TDM binary 2.05 installer-package & dmg,
wine-containers, playonmac-script, publisched sourcecode and documented & written that whole TDM-wiki article the TS mentioned.
But its isn't picked up or officially supported by the TDM team or others.
That is a shame, when you know the solutions above are used by other players on mac os.
and we got vm's that run mac os, to develop it.

Another solution for TS problem is to search someone in the mac community,
who would like to build one executable that can launch TDM (and future versions).
Why not someone of the DR-developers? (the one who created that 2.8.0 app?)
@duzenko @greebo do you know the persion who created that app and can help us?

Absolutely have no idea about any of that

I'm afraid OSX is not supported by TDM.

I would second Freyk's advice to run TDM inside some Wine-like environment.

Well, the final patch was from me. And it happened only because I was given SSH access to one such machine 😃

I think some user tried to resurrect MacOS build recently, I even see a bunch of ifdef-s he put all over the SIMD code. No idea if he succeeded or not.

I created the DR macOS app, DR 2.8 has a working Xcode project. (I just did it for fun, I don't think there's many (if any) DR users on Mac.)

TDM is a different story, I know that we had a working Xcode project back in 2012. Can't say what happened after that.

Before anyone spends any significant amount of time on getting TDM to run natively on macOS again, remember that Apple has deprecated OpenGL on its platform, and the version that is supported has not been updated in a while. Since creating and maintaining a full Metal port just for the macOS platform is not feasible for this project, I'm afraid a TDM native executable may soon be impossible to do at all.
