Framerate issue on The Lost Citadel

Recommended Posts

I asked this over in the game thread & @nbohr1more advised me to open a new thread in here & post my darkmod.cfg

Spoilers are where I'm describing in game scenes

Spoiler

I got to the caves area with the zombies & the fire elementals, the game was stuttering so much I eventually noclipped to let the fire elementals out just to see what would happen then went back to stand on the big rock at the entrance looking at the doors, I'll go & do it properly if I can sort the stutter problem

I got the console up & typed in "com_showfps 1", the number at top right varies between 8 & 12 fps depending on where I'm looking

Spoiler

The fire jets in the wall are around 8 fps, looking anywhere else is between 10 & 12

I went to the game settings menu & went through every video & advanced setting but nothing changed the framerate, it persistently stuck between 8 & 12 fps

My system info : Dell Precision T1700

CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz × 8

Graphics: Quadro K600/PCIe/SSE2

Ram: 8Gb

OS: Zorin 15.3, 64 bit

Darkmod.cfg is attached

That "graphics card" is not meant for gaming.

GPU Memory1GB DDR3

Memory Interface128-bit

Memory Bandwidth29.0GB/s

CUDA Cores192

EDIT:  You can probably get the game running at 30 fps by extreme tweaking, OR, https://www.ebay.com/itm/GIGABYTE-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1060-Mini-ITX-3GB-GDDR5-PCI-Express-3-0-Video-Card/154048649813?epid=245224489&hash=item23de03da55:g:DqgAAOSw7DRfOb7p

Was surprised just how much better it is:

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-Quadro-K600-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-3GB/m8080vs3646

EDIT 2: Also, replace the stock cooler if you haven't already, re-apply thermal paste. Those old systems had crap paste that hardened and became ineffective after only  a few years and the CPU would crumble under most loads (ie, thermal throttle).
If it can fit, a decent Noctua tower cooler (https://noctua.at/en/nh-c14) and new thermal paste would help the 4770 auto turbo up to 3.9Ghz on 2 cores, but only if it has thermal headroom.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

@nbohr1more Thank you I made the changes you suggested & I'm getting around 30 fps, it seems a lot smoother, thanks for the help, I think you can regard this as sorted, if I get any more issues I think really I'd need to look at getting a new graphics card

@stgatilov I started the game from the beginning & I was getting 8-10 fps from the opening scene, noclipped to the same location and still got the same figures, so I'm not surprised I was getting headaches, I'm quite surprised I got as far as I did tbh, the tweaks from nbohr1more have helped a lot though, I'll probably start this one again now as it's a lot smoother

@AluminumHaste I bought this system a few years ago primarily as a work machine for DB & web work as I had bills to pay & my previous system just upped & died on me, if it played games that would be a bonus but at the time it wasn't a consideration

The tweaks from nbohr1more have helped tremendously & as I mentioned above if I get any more issues I'm seriously going to have to look at getting another graphics card but just at the moment, with everything that's going on in the UK, any spare cash I have is kinda spoken for, but I'd rather not bore you guys with that, that's my problem

So thanks to all of you for having a look at this for me, it's much appreciated

Before jumping into this, I would suggest running some CPU stress tests and thermal monitoring to determine if overheating actually is a problem.

If your CPU temps are fine and you start removing coolers and re-applying thermal paste, you are at risk of making things worse (or even damaging the CPU) for no actual benefit, especially if you are not experienced at this kind of hardware maintenance.

Just today, I nearly shat myself when PC didn't turn on after routine cleaning. It launched as normal on the next day.

I suspect the reason would be the condensate that appears when pressing the compressed air can for more than 1-2 seconds, which I suppose acts as a refrigerant. Another suspicion was that I was too active with the vacuum cleaner to take all the big dust leftovers around the computer case. So yeah, always work in rubber gloves, put the power cord in the electric socket for grounding, turn off power supply if you have a switch for that. Also, ground yourself against metal at all times. Simple rules but if you do not work regularly it's so easy to forget. It's like handling acid leaking car battery. Easy to forget how sensitive these things are.

Much harder to clean laptops, but same rules apply, even more strictly.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

Indeed be carefull when using canned air or compressed air in any form as it causes condensation.

Rule of thumb let the PC sit unconnected for atleast an hour after cleaning it with those methods.

Also make sure you are grounded when doing any cleaning work as micro sparks can and will kill your PC even if you dont notice them :).

The Quadro cards are ment more for design work (cad and such)  but are not optimized for gaming so it would probably lack the muscle needed for darkmod.

That said i can load and play Doom3 on my (very) old Quadro  FX 1800 but it took some tweaking.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
