Which game would you like to erase from your brain, just to experience it once again completely anew, and why?

I'd like to be able to erase my memories of Mass Effect so that I could experience it for the first time again.

My missions:           Stand-alone                                                      Duncan Lynch series

Down and Out on Newford Road              the Factory Heist

                                                                                                  A House Call

                                                                                                  The House of deLisle

omikron the nomad soul would probably fit pretty well with the darkmod engine, atleast the first map since it is a lot of corridors and cramped environment, anekbah might be a problem though as that part is a lot more open and also rather sunny :P. Some guy managed to port the old map meshes to be used in unreal engine, he even forwarded a video showing one of the chars you can become running through the city in unreal

I can name so many games for a "total recall" refresh, but I think one that really blew my mind open with the ability to create atmosphere and exploration and a compelling storyline is the Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver games, especially the second one that delved into Raziel's past. The first one was a tremendously beautiful gothic world of magic and beasts I hadn't seen before in a game. The second one was bigger and more of the same with an added backstory. I can't ever unsee how cool these were to play at the time.

Perhaps a second game as I'm now thinking about it, is the first Batman Arkham Asylum game, which for me really captured the essence of the dark and brooding sides of the complex mind of who Batman is. And the gameplay was exciting, the way he could plan for taking out a room of baddies, and hide, and sneak around, and get clues to discovering the eventual larger protagonist behind the scenes. This game was the first of many more that kept the Batman gaming experience, but the first was so memorable in setting up the style.

Rochard. If you like:

  • Platform games (somewhat)       - Check
  • Puzzles                                       - Check
  • A decent story with good acting  - Check
  • Good music                                 - Check
  • 3D graphics (background)           - Check
  • Gravity control                             - Check
  • A Gravity gun                              - Check

I love this game. Never found something seriously comparable.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, without a doubt.

I played it perfectly, took out the whole town and everyone everywhere, never got seen, never killed, et cetera. ...and so I get to the final boss, and I save.

...but here's the thing - spoilers: The boss is in a room with two scouting things which require lethal ammunition to take out. ...and sure, MAYBE I could figure out a way to evade all three of them, but I just gave up. I just should have brought a basic gun - ANYTHING lethal - and I didn't know that. ...and so that was years ago and I never finished it, because there's no point in not doing it perfectly, but at the same time the game is far too long to restart all over again.

...and yes, I could have used multiple saveslots. I usually use an obscene amount of saveslots, just for this reason. ...but this time I only used three, and I freaking saved over all of them right before the boss.

(Human Revolution isn't a 10/10 game, but why forget 10/10 games?)

I would like to erase these games for a new experience:

Portal - Portal 2

That's the advantage of having a shit memory: You can play games again after a short period of time, no problem. :)

I totally forgot most puzzles after 3 years of not playing the Portal games.

I really hope Valve releases a Portal 3 at some point. The games are just fun.

My go to answer for this question used to be Metal Gear Solid 1 for the original Playstation, but then I wondered now if I experienced it fresh for the first time today, as an adult in 2022 playing it as an old retro game on an emulator, I'd probably appreciate it academically, but not be totally enraptured by it as I was in 1999, when it was genuinely new and cutting edge for gaming, and like something I had never experienced before even in film or literature (I wasn't well-read at the time). This thought experiment would work better with recent releases that haven't had time to age yet, and don't have mountains of essays written about them to colour your expectations, but I can't think of any modern release that amazed me enough to warrant erasing them from my memory and playing them fresh again.

But on the other hand, I didn't play Thief Gold and TMA until long after their release and they definitely still hold up today as fresh experiences, regardless of how "dated" they look, sound and feel, so maybe MGS would still amaze me... I'm just not sure. I'd definitely recognize more of the references and rip-offs Kojima was leaning on and it would be a different experience regardless.

In regards of how little the gameplay dated, I would say that System Shock 2 is my absolute favorite. That game was so ahead of its time, it's ridiculous.

I also played it years after it had been released, and still was stunned about the possibilities, and the way the story is presented in the game.

Well I feel lucky then since I never actually got around to playing System Shock 2 despite being a fan of other immersive sims. I suspect it's because people like to play it with various unofficial patches and packs and tweaks that I'm not really sure where to begin. Nice to see an Enhanced Edition is on the way, so I'll wait to see if Nightdive does a good job with that and not another screwup like Blade Runner.

A word of warning, Agent Denton. This was a simulated experience; real LAMs will not be so forgiving.

probably wont hurt reading a good manual before diving in to SS2 ;) you might get

pretty surprised at how hard the first monster you meet hits > 2 to 3 hits and you're a statistic (as in dead) hehe.

the telekinetic class sucks rather badly at lower lvl's but can become a brutal powerhouse when lvl'ed up.

sadly so does the engineer so you have to get creative if playing those.

The Steam version of System Shock 2 runs great out of the box, without anything, but, the Enhanced Edition surely is even a bit... enhanced in that regard. :)

And, I can only recommend you to play it. If you like Deus Ex and Thief, you'll love System Shock 2.

One of my favorite of all times actually. That creepy atmosphere is unbeaten IMO.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
