I was about to play this game until I got hit by the fact I can't put away my weapons. The tilde key which is used to holster weapons is being occupied by the console. I've verified that I should be able to this and I searched for a fix. Unfortunately it appears this problem is entirely unique to me. Is there any known way to disable the console? I don't want to mess with rebinding.

Unless you have "seta com_allowConsole 1" in darkmod.cfg or autoexec.cfg or in command-line parameters, console should trigger by Ctrl+Alt+Tilde.
If you have this cvar set, then it is toggled by just Tilde.

I don't know about any other way to disable/enable console.

Yet when I directly input "seta com_allowConsole 0" into darkmod.cfg the console opens regardless of it.

Do you have an autoexec.cfg? Anything set in there would take precedence over darkmod.cfg.

Yes I tried. This also didn't work unfortunately.

The Linux version of TDM seems to use ` for the console regardless of whether com_allowconsole is set to 1 or 0. It's set to 0 on this machine and ` still brings down the console. Not sure if you want to call it a bug or not. Personally I don't mind because there's no penalty for keeping the blackjack out. It doesn't slow you down, it doesn't make you more visible, and AIs don't react to it unless you swing it.

Sounds like a bug, then. You could try the most recent dev build where the input system has been overhauled, perhaps that might fix it. If not, as a workaround you can always reassign the key or use the mouse wheel to cycle through weapons and eventually put them away.

Why not just reassign the "put away weapon"-key?

The dev version also has this problem.

This works fine

Why does "seta com_allowConsole 1" autoremove itself from Darkmod.cfg every time I start the game? I need to keep adding it in over and over and over again. How can I get this to stay put permanently?

Because non-archived cvar.
Moreover, I think you also need to write "set" instead of "seta".

Aha, it works fine now if I create an autoexec.cfg and put that in there.

There doesn't seem to be a difference in writing set or seta in autoexec.cfg, they both work (there).

What is the difference between set and seta?

cvarName [X]	Sets the value to X if the variable exists.
set cvarName [X]	As above, but creates the CVar if not present.
seta cvarName [X]	As above, but also stores the CVar value in [game]config.cfg so that it will be the default value. Never use seta on the command line!

I think I remember someone used seta in a script in some fm and this created a problem elsewhere because the setting was changed globally.

Or maybe I'm confusing things.

I use the "period" key to holster the weapons, easy to define any other in the key settings (I use mostly the mouse to play and interact, 5 buttons).

Desactivating the console IMHO isn't a good idea, sometimes it is needed, eg. in some missions are points where you can get stucked, only possible to get out with "noclip". I'm not a friend from cheats, but in big new missions with a complex content, it's good to have it at hand for some tests. Normally using cheats only in some old missions, which I had played already several times, to experiment something different, eg, spawning a Spider, with often hilarious reactions of the guards, things like this.

I just uploaded a new version of the Visible Player Hands mod. It's been updated for TDM 2.13 and has new animations. Check out the post if you're interested!

I moved from Manjaro Linux (rolling release) to Linux Mint (LTS). One of the reasons was that I found the updates a bit too often and long. But now on Mint I get updates every day, although they're usually small updates.

I'd like to track my level design progress a bit more often now, so I'm using the feed in my profile here.
I've been working intensively on Springheel's YouTube course over the past few days. I'm currently up to lesson 8. There is so much information that needs to be processed and practiced.
I have started to create my own house. As I don't have the imagination to create a good floor plan, I grabbed a floor plan generator from Watabou and experimented with it. I chose a floor plan that I will modify slightly, but at least I now have an initial idea.
I used two guards as a measuring tape: The rooms are two guards high. It turned out that I can simply double the number of boxes in DarkRadiant in grid size 8 that are drawn in the floor plan.
I practiced the simplest things on the floor plan first. Drawing walls, cutting walls, inserting doors, cutting out frames, creating VisPortals, furnishing rooms.
I have had my first success in creating a book. Creating a book was easier than I thought. I have a few ideas with books. The level I'm creating will be more or less a chill level, just for me, where I'll try out a few things. I don't have an idea for my own mission yet. I want to start small first.
For the cellar, I wanted to have a second entrance, which should be on the outside. I'm fascinated by these basement doors from the USA, I think they're called Bilco basement doors. They are very unusual in Germany, but this type of access is sometimes used for deliveries to restaurants etc., where barrels can be rolled or lifted into the cellar.
I used two Hatch Doors, but they got completely disoriented after turning. I have since got them reasonably tamed. It's not perfect, but it's acceptable.
In the cellar today I experimented with a trap door that leads to a shaft system. The rooms aren't practically finished yet, but I want to continue working on the floor plan for now. I'll be starting on the upper floor very soon.
