I wonder how you did that from this shot???  Great job really! :)

well it's not very hard actually. all I did was cutting out some good areas of the rock and used them as the "colour" for painting the bricks. I used some references for the shape of the bricks, so that they look natural (when you paint the shape totally from scratch you tend to make them look too uniform). the rest was just simple photoshopping - adding some shadows, moss and post processing.

glad you guys like it.

I started on the normalmap last night, but it's really hard to make it look good.

I first tried to do it with LW, but it took me just too long to do one single brick, so I decided to go a quite unconventional way: I took Corth's brick normalmap, cut out single stones and tweaked them, so that they fit exactly to the bricks of my texture. Then I did a heightmap for my texture and combined both. It's not perfect but it works.

a new window-texture, that could be used in a city, as well as in other places, like castles, mansions:

somehow my normalmap generated from a lightwave model turned out horrible, so the texture on the screenshot has just a photoshop generated normalmap.

used this photo from macsen for the "texture" for the bricks.

Wow, I actually did something useful. That stone is actually part of a Druids Circle. :D

I could get tons of shots of old medieval buildings, walls, windows, cathedrals, ecetra if you want them. The advantage of living in a non-economically prosperous part of Britain is that they don't have enough money to rip down all the old 13th Century buildings. ;)

Yes, that looks good BT, however, the problem with making it a strong pattern like that is that it really stands out that it's the same image plastered on all six sides of the crate, whereas the boring image isn't so obviously repeating.

Civillisation will not attain perfection until the last stone, from the last church, falls on the last priest.

of course that's always the problem with repeating or tiling textures - the more interesting the texture is, the more obvious is the repeating.

but in case of the crate is isn't THAT bad - I made a comparion shot - see the attachment. (Have to make a darker specular for the metal though.)

@isht yes I'll keep two versions of the crates.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
