Installation fails during hash validation

Hi

I am trying to install TDM on Linux Manjaro

The installer runs fine (v1.08), but when it's finished downloading files it starts validating their hashes and than it fails on a random file, at least it looks like it's a different file every time, saying that the hash is different after download.

I tried couple of different versions, different servers but no difference...

There were many people complaining that installer fails due to efficiently lost connection, but you are the first one to have it failing due to integrity check. To be honest, I added it as a security measure, and never thought that people could really successfully download files which are wrong.

Unless there are other people experiencing the same problem, I will consider our mirrors well-behaving.
So there is some sort of problem is on your side. It can be network or your machine.

Did you see similar issues unrelated to TDM?

For instance, you download a file, but it does not work properly when you try using it?
Or SHA mismatch if you actively check it after download?
Or web pages having content which should not be there?
That's what I'd expect to happen if your network is buggy.

Do you have random crashes or kernel panics?
Could you maybe check RAM and HDD/SSD?
Both of them can cause file data to change arbitrarily. And both are absolutely devastating to your data 😲
Some other program might change files while installer is working, but I guess it can only be worms and antiviruses, which are highly unlikely on a Linux machine 😀

Meanwhile, I'll try to provide TDM as alternative download.
The easiest way would be to upload it to some server to let you download, but I'm afraid that won't help in your case: you will simply get wrong data and the game won't work properly. Something with chunk-wise integrity checks is needed, so I guess Torrent is the only choice here.

Please grab all files named "tdm_installer_*.log" in the directory where you tried to install TDM, and share them here.
These are log files of the installer, I'll be able to understand what exactly failed (although I doubt I misunderstood it from your description).

Another thing: when installer error shows up, before clicking OK button look which files are present in the installation directory. They should all have __download prefix or something similar (e.g. __download0__tdm_gui01.pk4). Look if the file which installer complains about is present there.

If this file is missing or is empty, then probably the installer failed to create a file for some reason (permissions? free space?). If the failing file is present and contains some meaningful data, then it's really data corruption...

I spent most of the morning testing my RAM and as it turns out one of the modules is faulty, I removed it and tried the installation without it and now it works!!

Oh, crap 😲
Really sorry for you!

I had misbehaving RAM on my home PC when I was young.
My brother could not understand why everything was so buggy, and kept reinstalling Windows...
And I recall he also ran full-scale disk defragmentation at least once.
In the end, most of our data was corrupt 😭 And that was long before we cared about backups...

I strongly suggest checking the data on HDD and checking important data and backups.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
