The Dark Mod on Android

Hi. The OpenTouchGaming team, which I represent, would like to know the developers' opinion about the TDM port on android devices. How will they react to the fact that their game will be transferred to portable devices? Would they mind? In what form would they like to see their project; an APK that downloads everything need by itself? Or Just an APK with an engine?(the user himself must upload the necessary data to his device)

I'm not a developer, but I know he can port a lot of games to android. Ports of Doom and Quake are already available, as well as ports of games on the Build engine. We also know about rendering, it will not be as easy to do it as with Doom 3, and it will require more resources in hardware. We believe that someday "darkness will cover the staffers with its veil" and on the mobile platform.

This is not an announcement of a finished project, but just the beginning of development, if there is something to show in future, I will definitely post it here.

Thanks and see in the shadows.

We’ve had a few threads about this topic here. I guess someone port Doom 3 to OpenGL ES and folks thought it would be fairly easy to do the same to TDM. I would be thrilled to see a project like this come to fruition. I doubt anyone here objects to bundling the data into an APK. I think we’d actually prefer it if Linux distros properly bundled TDM but our CC asset license is not Kosher for most of them due to the Non Commercial ( NC ) content.

As long as you don’t try selling it, I don’t see any reason why you can’t proceed.

If you do wanna sell it, then you would need to have a team of asset creators to make all the replacement textures, models, etc so that none of your asset violate CC licensing

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

We are porting only the game engine itself, everything that will need to be taken from the PC version without changes, I hope this will not violate the license?

Yes, do that.
According our cc-license and your apps,
your app needs to be free in cost,
when you want to use TDM-assets for your project.
(but im not sure)

for inspiration, I just want to say, i tried to run it on my tablet, using DIII4A.
And it runs also nice using steam link (see topic),
but a native client would be nice.

I think the biggest problem isn't that TDM works on Android, due it is a modified Linux kernel, I see more problems to adapt TDM to the touchscreens, without lost the playability. TDM for a good handling need a lot of keys, not shure if it is easy in a small touchscreen,

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

Ok, but I don't know if it is easy to play a lot of missions with these big controls covering a good part of the screen, in a game that requires good visibility, les in small tablets or mobile. Maybe a modification, similar, at least in part, to the game Eternium (despite it's another genre, RPG, mobile and PC free2play, no pay2win), maybe better. It works with gestures on the touchscreen, apart from keyboard and mouse on the PC, this would leave the screen free.

The minimum sys specs really are another problem in mobile devices, which needed a low res adaption of TDM for these to work, not the PC engine. Maybe in the Android version older and smaller missions with adaptions of earlier engines. Possible but it seems a lot of work.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
