Found a way to almost double performance!!!!

"Upgraded" my Ryzen 5800X (amazing processor) to an Intel i7 12700K, I get almost double the FPS in heavy missions.

Written in stone, the starting view was at around 80-85fps with my settings, and with the new cpu it's at 135fps. Pretty amazing increase that I really didn't expect.

And all it costs is a new motherboard, cpu, ram........I think I have a problem

Btw shouldn't switching from stencils to maps increase performance if the CPU is too loaded? I think TDM could use a benchmark demo like the time demo benchmark in Doom 3 if that's still available and it works...

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

"Written in Stone" is not the heaviest mission for CPU's.

Try "Scroll of Remembrance" if you want to make a CPU scream in pain.

Even "Briarwood Manor" outdoor area is heavier than "Written in Stone" .

What even is a high end PC really? I have an intel quad core and 1650 - both mobile chips. While arguably modern, most games released in the past couple years run like absolute crap. I admittedly never perceived any performance issue in Written in Stone. It runs noticeably better than my mission for example, or even classic missions like Penny Dreadful 3, but I wasn’t profiling the mission while playing so perhaps I just slam into a GPU bottleneck well before the CPU becomes an issue.

I must confess, I'm a bit skeptical. While the 12700K is stronger in single-core performance than the 5800X, it shouldn't be that much stronger. There might be additional factors at play :)

Same GPU, Radeon 6800XT. Same Ram speeds 3600Mhz, CL16.

Same CFG file, no changes.

EDIT: Damn, I get ANOTHER 30 FPS with bindless textures turned on! 165 fps (Too bad it's completely broken on AMD gpu's)

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Also opening scenes?

AFAIR Briarwood Manor was classic case of triangle count excess

Written in Stone is not - it's doing a lot of everything, not just iterating over one huge triangle list

Yes both. "Scroll of Remembrance" is possibly our worst case scene. Briarwood Manor at least appears to have made a reasonable attempt to optimize based on advised practices.

Could be anything, e.g. our fps limiter confusing the AMD driver power saving algo

IMHO the former is sheer draw call abuse while the latter is more than that - many moving entities, etc

I never looked at Scroll of Remembrance before, but yeah, the lack of optimization effort is obvious

Got the same FPS when setting the in game to be 400 fps, and using RTSS to cap FPS at 238.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
