Can I get a DDS?

Nort

Recommended Posts

I need to export the default file "nobletop2_local.tga" to a DDS file, because I think it's a missing key component for a patch.

I have GIMP, which can usually do that, but I haven't updated it in three years, and so I don't have the DDS plugin for it. I hate to install program updates, so if somebody already has a newer GIMP, could you just send me the exported DDS? That would be great.

Update is always advisable. But instead of waiting for someone to send you a copy, why not download it directly from the official website with all the plug-ins you need? In this way you have the last version. Gimp es OpenSource and free

https://www.gimp.org

A good complement editor in professional level is also Krita, also FOSS

I only ever expect to replace this one DDS file. If I run into more missing DDS:es than this one, I'll upgrade. Upgrading takes a long time for me. It can take an hour. I don't have an hour.

Gimp update don't need so much, at least if you don't use an old modem with 56 bauds. When you have a slow internet, downloading a newer version from other user needs even more. I think that update Gimp or download the last versión from the oficial page is the fastes solucion.

I use Krita and downloading and install it are only a few minutes-(Krita also can handle raster file formats.)

I think Krita has no dds support

@Nort I think you might need it later anyway, so you might as well update Gimp.

It would literally take either of you five minutes to unzip "tdk_ai_humanoid_nobles.pk4", and go to "\models\md5\chars\nobles\noblewoman\nobletop2_local.tga", and export it, and yet you want me to spend an hour downloading a massive program, and risk compatibility issues with my operating system, or better yet, install a whole new editor, as if my computer wasn't full enough.

Guys, since the bugs wasn't about the TGA having no DDS, I will never ever have to make a DDS ever in my life.

I just asked you for a single DDS. I don't understand you.

Sorry, in this case I misunderstood you, if it only a problem with one archive, the solution is easy

https://convertio.co/es/dds-tga/

There you can convert also any other format.

Yes, I saw that, but online tools are usually about getting a crappy result, and then being told that you have to pay if you can an actually good result, so figured that Gimp, and the forums, would be more reliable. ...but apparently you'd much rather like to recommend software to me, than do basic stuff. It's weird.

No, not all online conversion tools have a crappy results, less with image formats.  Apart it has only a cost when you want to convert a lage o large amount of files, not to have a better quality. Free conversión is only with the limit of the filesize and amount per day.

Here are another conversors which you can test, compleetly free

https://www.aconvert.com/image/dds-to-tga/

https://onlineconvertfree.com/convert-format/dds-to-tga/

https://anyconv.com/dds-to-tga-converter/

https://pro-convert.com/dds-to-tga/

https://fabconvert.com/convert/dds/to/tga

etc. np need to install other software, when you can obtain a good result with an free online service. If one don't give you the needed quality, simply try other, there are a lot out there

This was the equivalent of me asking you to pass the salt, and you going "Did someone say salt? Did you know that there are plenty of unclaimed salt mines not far from here? This is a list of addresses and contact information to the people in charge. It won't cost you a thing, and you'll make lots of profit, and you can have all the salt you want too. Just look at all this salt.".

The link I posted also gives info about ATI Compressonator (or AMD Compressonator), these are guides, so I think converting is not as simple as save as and you're done (for best results). Best to use your own tools for your own fixes.

Yes, there is a scale that goes from internet converter results, to Gimp results, to "I am Springheel, king of the forum, and I have the source files, and I know everything, and I can provide you with the perfect godly DDS.". ...and on this scale, having no DDS, is the lowest possible quality.

...except in this case, having no DDS is actually better, because TGA is better than DDS.

I'm just so done talking about this. This thread didn't need to happen.

I found this plugin for GIMP, you can try it https://code.google.com/archive/p/gimp-dds/downloads

I never used GIMP, I'm on photoshop with nvidia plugin to import/export DDS.

You didn't "find" it. It's literally the first hit when you search for "export DDS".

I'm starting to doubt that any of you even have Dark Radiant installed on your computers at this point. ...or maybe this has turned into some sort of a joke at my expense - don't know, don't care. Fine: Don't send me files. Turns out I didn't need them anyway.

I will not offend you it's not my goal, I didn't know you already did a search about the plugin, anyway it's a misunderstanding

Here you can try it I did it with photoshop https://www.mediafire.com/file/j41q2j1p2o43u17/nobletop2_local.dds/file

Thank you. You are the first one who understood me correctly. Unfortunately, like I just said, this file was needed about 24 hours ago, and I no longer need it. ...but thank you.

I recommend to still use Compressonator because many other softwares and their plugins won't always give you the mipmaps, and many other useful options like balancing channels.  Without mipmaps, most the benefits of DDS will be lost.

Can you give the link for the download of that plugin?

I'm pretty sure there is no such plugin (I searched for it before), but I could be wrong.

This is from the author's own Github:

https://github.com/sakirst/gimp-dds

...but you're right: The Google Code link seems to be gone. I think they removed it because Gimp integrated it into its core.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
