System Shock Remake

Hi all,

So it's finally been released about 7 years after I've backed it....

My impression is that the textures and graphics even tweaked up to the max look terrible. It's very small compared to the average game at under 4gbs which seems to have been made by sacrificing texture/graphic quality. I really can't bring myself to play it due to this. Am I being too judgemental or am I within my rights?

Of course you're free to not play it if you don't want to. Personally, I would have given it the Resident Evil remake treatment; with graphics that would absolutely blow the mind, new areas to explore, surprises and changes for people who think they already know the game just because they played the original one five times over, etc.

What we got here is not really that, and yeah, that's disappointing. But I don't think these people were working with a big budget.

Also I like the way Doom 3 fleshed out the story and the environments, with those little videos playing on the wall which were there to explain the purpose of each location. I would have also done something similar to that in this remake; because it makes the game world feel more "real" and "lived in". Of course most people went into Doom 3 just wanting another action-packed Doom experience with minimal story or none at all, but I feel that it would have been more appreciated here.

It wasn't a "sacrifice", it was a deliberate decision. People wanted the game to be as close as possible to the original, including pixelated graphics. ;)

If you ask me, the former version based on the Unity engine looked and felt better. But, hey... I guess I'm not the right person to judge that, as I never played the original, and always found that the art style of System Shock 2 is much better anyway.

This also illustrates the issue with community funded games: Too many cooks spoil the broth. In game design, you need freedom, not thousands of people who want you to do this and this and that.

Just take a look at the Steam forums and see how all those wimps complain again about everything. Hopeless.

On the bright side this is probably the one and only game of 2023 that RTX4060TI users can run at anything above 1080p with high quality settings. Hahaha... zing.

?

I don't know where you got that from, but, even my RTX 3060 Ti, which is slower than the 4060 Ti, can run many more current games at high quality in 1080p, even some up to 144 Hz.

Of course, some are so ridiculously demanding that not even a 4090 can run them at max quality with a proper frame rate.

You might want to read some tests with benchmarks on the RTX 4060 Ti: https://www.pcgameshardware.de/Geforce-RTX-4060-Ti-8GB-Grafikkarte-279648/Tests/Release-Review-Benchmark-Specs-Preis-1419889/3/

@gokudo Something wrong with the original thread?

Other than the fact that I wasn't aware of its existence before posting, absolutely not. Wasn't aware I was committing a capital offence! Sometimes I just feel the need to do things spontaneously.

Well, maybe we can skip the public flogging this time. ;)

Just wanted to say that there already is a System Shock Remake thread.

Having a lot of fun playing it at the moment, by the way. It gets better and better. I was a tad underwhelmed by the first level (which I already knew from the demo) for some reason, but, the second level suited me much more.

Biggest disappointment so far is the melee combat. As others have said, it's hard to tell when you score a hit. There really is no "thwack" sound, be it a fleshy one when fighting mutants, or a metallic one when fighting bots, and they don't recoil.

This is one aspect that id games always got right. You always knew when you scored a hit on their monsters.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
