So I just downloaded and started this and I'm not very far into it yet. But so far this is gorgeous and amazingly well done. Like "I could live in this place." well done. Great job!

The one in the fireplace, it's frobable but you need to get the right angle

I just retried both this and the cabinets in Jerry's on my test install of TDM and they both work fine.

EDIT: I'm not saying there might not be an issue, but I can't reproduce them and if anyone can I'd be keen to hear the details.

not being frobbable. I even noclipped eventually just to be sure and it's totally inert. Win11, 64. Have not yet been to the jewelry shop.

What a mission. All my favorite ingredients - verticality, story, secrets, optional objectives - in a setting previously unseen in TDM as far as I recall. Sneaking about felt incredibly fresh, almost like a different game. And the doors with the little latches! Unlocking shortcuts and passages was most enjoyable, which is good as it's a big mission with lots to explore. The Ministry was pretty challenging to stealth through with all the cameras, particularly the one on the top floor. Found 9 secrets out of 10 and a bit over 5k loot.

When I jumped into the pool and appeared elsewhere, I thought it was a bug lol. That trap was brilliant, really caught me by surprise.

The problem with the unfrobbable lever in the fireplace and the two display cases also happened to me. For some reason, when I started the mission again and noclipped over to the fireplace lever and the two display cases in the jewel shop, all of them could be frobbed. I guess I must have done something weird in the playthrough to change that.

Great mission thanks! The setting makes a lovely change and it's beautiful. I think I've done everything except:

  • get into the jeweller's shop
  • open the scimitar/sword case at the top of the Ministry of Defence

Any hints please?

jeweller's shop: There is another window at the side of the shop.  Maybe lift yourself up somehow and peek through it.

Scimitar case: look closely near the chair/table by the door that goes out to the patio.

So regarding the frobbing issues.  The thing in common with the two areas is a location script executes when entering/leaving the area which sets the frobability of the items.  This is to prevent them being frobbed from outside their location, through walls, etc.  I've used this technique in my last 3 FMs without any problems.  I'm wondering if these aren't executing for some people?

regarding the lever in the mage fireplace - it's not easy to frob.  Make sure you use your lean left/right controls to really lean into the fireplace.  It's not THAT hard but you probably do need to use your lean ability.  And if you noclip into it, you need to be inside the fireplace.

 

So for people having the issue - at your convenience could you try starting a new game and noclipping to the problem areas to see if the issue still happens?  The location scripts should still execute while in noclip mode.

Oleron, I don't think you can actually enter the room where they are sitting.  Instead

you need to find the apartment of the guy with the model ship award.  I can't be exact, but its in the same courtyard as the restaurant windows you are trying to reach, on the opposite side to the mosque.  Go to the top floor of that apartment, on to the balcony, climb the railings, and make your way along a very narrow ledge to relieve the man of his special bottle and the lady of her necklace. 

I have a query of my own: below the room where you arrive after the outdoor pool event, there's a window with a gold telescope on the ledge.  I may have already been in that area, but can't find my way back.  Any clues please?

Also, in addition to the jewelry cases not being frobabble, neither is the lever in the mage's fireplace, despite my leaning every which way.  Can someone please remind me how to noclip?

As to your questions:

To get to the room with the gold spyglass, you need to frob that lever in the mage fireplace.  Sorry it's not working, this wasn't an issue in beta.  To noclip, see here: https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Console_Useful_Controls (bring down console and type 'noclip' )

Yeah and this is the problem - there's no way really to tell why it's happening.

To troubleshoot this issue, we would probably need someone who has experienced the problem to volunteer for a lot of really boring testing.

I'm afraid I'm just about to get heavily tied up with some real life activities, so I can't help with any testing in the next few weeks.

I'm not an FM author myself, but scripts seem to add complexity and the risk of malfunctions, both in TDM and Thief FMs.  And I wonder if they are avoidable in these two instances.  Are you sure the script is necessary at all with the lever, which is fairly hard to find?  And might it not be simpler to move the jewel cases further from the window and dispense with the script?

The problem with the lever is if people have the frob helper turned on...

And you're right about the cabinets - they can probably be moved.

I guess I'll have to add these scripts to the ever-growing list of unreliable TDM features....

Hi,

thanks for this missions. I am stucking with the optional target in the mosque:

When I grab the book, I am not able to use the stone to open the door from inside. It is possible from outside and inside without triggering the "alarm".

Do I oversee something or is it a bug?

I really liked this mission, the variety, the architecture, the verticality, the soundscapes, the nice little touches like

nargile dens, one-way doors, illusionary pools or damage from sharp objects 😄

In some ways I think it expands the TDM universe in a totally new direction, like few other missions do.

I've also encountered the unfrobbable jewel cases and fireplace lever. In my first visit to the jeweler's, the cases were frobabble and I left them open. Visiting the mage's place it was impossible to activate the lever, no matter how I leaned left-right-forward, noclipped inside the fireplace etc. The strange thing is, when I went back to the jeweler's, the case lids were now unfrobbable too, I could not close them.

I wonder if just leaving/re-entering the room will fix the issue with the jewelry cabinets.  I've left a 'known issues' section in the original post to try that.  As this seems to be far too common, I will probably need to release an update.

      I'm back! Happy new years, TDM folks!
      I brought with me a quick update for my first FM that fixes up a lot of small issues that didn't get caught in beta testing. I didn't exactly expect it to take me nearly 9 months to release a patch, but it's been a wild year to say the least. Teaching, finishing up my Master's of Education, and all manner of other events forced me to drop out of the anniversary FM contest and ate up all my time, but I'm back again in a comfortable position to start catching up on all the new FMs. I may even start work on another spooky project of greater length and difficulty in the coming year.
