Is thi real?

Seems like it. Multiple gaming news outlets have been reporting about it as well. I bet @cabalistic is probably jumping with excitement, when he reads this. 🙂

The system requirements are vague as hell on the Steam page. But releasing this year is nice, so hoping for more details before too long.

I just want to hear more Stephen Russell!

A level editor would be cool, but I’m not holding my breath.

Ooooof, I missed this post before I tossed up an announcement thread of my own. 😂

Yeah, I'm pretty excited. Totally not what I expected on my bingo card for today.

I saw an announcement for this and I thought it was some little fan project, but this is a legit new game.

The aesthetic was respectable but a bit too "clean". How is it that modern graphics can never quite capture the dingy authentic look of the days when light was baked in?

I don't have experience with VR, but in principle the hands gameplay is an interesting innovation.

Well, I'll give it the same hope I've given every Thief game since TDS.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

The Thief is a girl now. Who would've thunk?

Good thing that I don't care about VR games anyway. Don't know if I could take yet ANOTHER franchise tattering. Looks like Thief 4 anyway.

I wonder if the girl will be called Garett, or at least they have the decency to call her differently.

After the way that Star Wars Outlaws with "Hannah Solo" flopped hard, do developers ever learn?

From what I could gather, I don't think they're cutting all his lore this time. The video implies the old mechanical eye imparts his soul to the protagonist or something. At least that's what they made it out to appear as.

Her voice acting felt really wooden though. And while I like some throwback elements to TDS, it still feels really... undefined I guess? Like I'm a fan of them trying to not go hyper realistic on the art but now it has that plastic sheen to it. Thief was always about gritty fantasy, which at least T4 understood that; all the while getting all the story elements dead wrong.

Like, this direction is confusing but I still want to see it do well. Renewed development interest could promise better direction down the road. Though it's hard to not be bitter with how little AAA seems to understand this series.

For AAA or AA games, Dishonored is probably as good as it gets in terms of understanding the core elements of the game, while it was something entirely different, of course.

I must say that I'm not even mad about the developers of Thief 4, for doing it the way they did, as it's a reboot, and it simply reflects their vision of a game like that. It's just that the game is irrelevant to me, as neither the gameplay or lore are on the same level as the original gameplay and lore.

TBH, I'm always surprised and stunned again, how good the lore of the original Thief games is. Some real thought, imagination, and humour went into that, which is pretty much spot on in terms of what I like.

IIRC, T4 had very troubled development too, the vision changed several times. What they managed to salvage is a mess thematically, but at least they managed to ship it in playable state :)

Considering that it's all political anyway, and we live in 2025, I doubt that they will ever learn.

Bloody DEI hire thieves. How am I supposed to get immersed in VR if I have to play as a woman?

I wish all the cult classic franchises were never released as VR exclusives, because it's pretty much like a spit in the face of all the fans of such games, especially if they didn't have sequels for a long time. I had the same feeling when they released Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond and though I didn't care about HL: Alyx but I'm sure other people also felt betrayed when it was released.

Two threads?!

It could be they have compromised on some graphical aspects to ensure high FPS on a VR headset.

Yeah that's my bad, I misread the title of this thread and didn't think it was posted on yet. 🙃

EidosMont/Embracer game design deciders or WTF these guys are called have truly improved amazingly: take a niche game, piss off the original fan base by completely redesigning the game, wait 10+ years, then use the annoying redesign once more and make it even more niche by making it VR.

But with them, nothing should surprise you anymore.

It's a pity, actually. I think the idea of the eye and a thief who finds the thing a few years after Garret's demise would have been quite good... if it had been set up sensibly after the end of Deadly Shadows in the well-known steampunk-medieval setting.

The best thing about the trailer is that it contains the warning that the game is being created “in collaboration with Eidos Montreal”.

I didn't think those responsible would be so honest.

End of announcement.

I felt betrayed indeed as a huge HL1 and HL2 fan, but when I watched the non-VR version gameplay, I noticed that if it wouldn't have been VR, it wouldn't have been better than many fan-made HL2 mods. So they probably made it VR only to a) promote Steam VR, but also b) because fans would have been disappointed by a normal version anyway. And of course they also had you play a female side character instead of the "old white guy " who made the series famous. I wonder how this will work out with Witcher 4 where again you will not play as the guy after which the series is named.

DEI or not, what they practically do is against their target audience. Although that doesn't surprise me much, as the same thing happens with 99% of advertising these days as well.

Yeah I can’t imagine playing as anyone but the iconic Frank Witcher.

Especially after what they already did to our boy Tony Half-life.

I think this game actually looks pretty cool even if it’s only for chicks sadly.

Ha ha ha. Yes, there are more witchers, but to everybody "The Witcher" is Gerald. And I never said Half-Life was connected to Gordon's name! I'm just annoyed that this is still the common approach nowadays, also see "John Wick: Ballerina"...

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.

I moved from Manjaro Linux (rolling release) to Linux Mint (LTS). One of the reasons was that I found the updates a bit too often and long. But now on Mint I get updates every day, although they're usually small updates.
