Ok. Yeah i seen some mention of the sound going to the max on one os while dualbooting. Ill see if i can figure out the cause.

Havent run into it myself lately but then again i used a non standard way of dualbooting which does not use the grub bootloader on windows partitions. Instead each uses its own and i control which os to boot from the bios boot menu.

This avoids conflicts that may arise but also takes longer to set up.

Yeah and pressing, what, f11 all the time to access the boot menu also doesn't sound that convenient to me tbh 😅

Very recently, I saw an interesting 1 hour interview  with Linus T.

He said that in his opinion the biggest disadvantage of Linux at present is that there is not "The" Linux distro. I agree. I find it really difficult to keep track of everything, and (as I've already written elsewhere) you can find conflicting opinions/statements about practically every distro online... not to mention the “flamewars” (which almost remind me of ridiculous conflicts like MS/Apple or PS/X-Box).

Anyways, from said video, I also understood a few other things:

1. LT is in good physical shape these days
2. He seemingly uses Fedora
3. He considers Debian complicated for DE installation.
4. He is not the rude guy some wish to make him (and when I think about it, I can understand better and better why he was a little rough around the edges here and there in the past).

Mmm yeah the distro wars.

To many to count on both hands.

Some with seemingly small differences under the hood except for non standard package managers and a few with custom in house built de's like solus budgie.

The problem is like you say instead of picking the best ones they all root for there own modifications by tooth and nail 😂.  Linux is finally doing ok but in my opinion this was one of the reasons it took so long and why it may still fail.

Arch is a bit to bleading edge that i would trust it with day to day work but pacman is a very good package manager. The arch de looks really good to.

Im all for KDE based desktops these days, to many problems with gnome/gtk.

Bazzite is very nice for gaming last i heard.

If they could all collaborate on a single distro and pool all the best stuff linux would be one hell of an os 😄.

Best kernel hmm...

I know linus swears on the monolithic version but a good micro kernel would be nice.

Sadly gnu hurd newer really took off and is the only micro linux kernel i know off. Should be stable as far as i know so one could experiment. Not a lot of packages for it though.

The bsd kernel if they could bring it up to speed would be very good (bit like the mac kernel but opensource).

The rust kernel is interresting but is a bit to experimental yet.

Anything with google in it should diaf 😂

Hmm looks like i was wrong. Hurd is actually still developed and now even has a 64 bit version.

As for packages, around 75% have been ported.

Differences from the monolithic kernel ? Well harddrives are listed as hd0 hd1 hd2 etc. On mainstream linux they use dev0 dev1 dev2. There are also some differences on how the kernel handles things which on a micro kernel is more akin to how things are on windows with a client / server structure. This might in time lead to an ui that a windows user would feel right at home in.

It is still not recommended installing hurd on real hardware instead one should use a vm. This is mostly due to drivers not being ported yet.

Google microsoft and quite a few of the other large corps endorse hurd. Im actually a bit scared about that part 🤯.

For google it kinda makes sense since android is a custom linux os built for mobile, as for microsoft they might try to muscle in on the mobile market by doing there own custom built version based on it. Both will be chock full of targeting ads following the custom 😂.

I doubt microsoft will adopt it for pc as that would be aking to shooting yourself in the face with a shotgun, ofc they are going to help a competitor... not.

From your posting history in this thread, I take it you still use hardware with Windows in all historic variations? :)

Apart from your beloved Solus 😀, which distros would you recommend for people only doing regular stuff (email, banking, photos) when using the PC?  Which distros would you recommend for gaming/Dark Mod mapping?

For regular stuff most of them would do fine 🙂 mostly just a question of how easy the interface is for new users.

personally zorin os is quite good for people who come from the windows world due to how the interface is setup.

for gaming bazzite, bleading edge os based on the fedora and steam os. plays better with ROG Ally than windows.

for development any of them would do but beware of different package managers if you intend on making packages for use on the other distros. arch is a good bet if you want the latest and greatest otherwise fedora because it supports most anything out there.

so in retrospect the best  allrounder is probably fedora hence why i guess linus swears on it 😄.

i still use windows on my retro box. mostly because i had some trouble finding a distro which had a small enough footprint.

many distros still worked on the archaic hardware but it was hemming and hawing at the seams 😂 and generally ran like ass. also the project is mostly for fun and old games and is not even on the internet now that i got the differing windows versions updated. i even broke out my old msdn discs so i have a full development system with visual studio 6.0 visual studio 2003 .net i can use if i feel the urge to toy with something like the lithtech engine 😉 which in its original form was made for those.

Hmm bazzite has great integration with games though i ran into a bug that many others have also noticed. The ui scales wrongly on 4k screens so that the desktop corners are cut off. Some suggestions told to start steam in dev mode and scale it manually but i could not find that option... other than that it runs pretty well. It uses flatpack by default so expect some mocking about to be nessesary (permissions etc).

Solus runs my stuff just fine though and without the ui bug so ill stay on that for the time being.

Yeah, biker reported problems with bazzite as well (though I do not recall what it was). He is seemingly inclined to go with CachyOS.

Yeah it has something to do with steams desktop integration.

Bazzite defaults to using the same as steamos which also has this problem.

I guess that is why solus works ok since it uses wayland as standard.

Cachy should also be ok i think.

Got diablo 2 ressurected working on bazzite though i had a few rather annoying problems with the launcher.

Lutris does not have a runner as standard for blizzards launcher so i had to muck about a bit with wines settings, it works quite ok now though.

My mouse on the other hand seems to have a problem with the scroll whell not working... its a razer basilisk.

Strangely it works fine in solus 😂

reinstalled solus on my gamer and bought a wd black nvme to get some use out of the pcie4 connections.

allmost 8gb's througput 🤯 well it was reviewed as one of the fastest nvme's out there but also with the downside that it probably would'nt last as long as some of the slower models.

everything runs blazingly fast now 😆.

for future testing of linux ill probably use a mechanical harddrive so as to not wear out my ssd's.

Are you really installing enough for that to make a difference?

been testing different distros for a while allready before i settled on what i now use so ya 😂.

also having to setup literal hundreds of different games does take its toll on write cycles.

while ssd's in general have become less error prone i still want to limit writes as much as possible with prices where they are now. chances are if one of my drives does go bad that i wont be able to afford replacing it.

Maybe you could take a page out of YouTube channels like ETA Prime and install/run games on an external SSD. At least, I think that's what he does.

I do have external drives but sadly they are all mechanical as i only use them for storage of some historic stuff i newer really needed a fast drive for that.

Even so an external ssd would also be prone to wearing out.

And my external drives are nas drives at 8 tb... an ssd at that size would be seriously expensive 😂

Posted

one thing that could work would be a hybrid harddrive. these use ssd chips as a buffer for the mechancial harddrive making them quite a bit faster as long as there is data in the buffer. sadly they are allmost impossible to get now. the only models i seen lately are for nas like mine and they cost a ton of money. they do however go as high as 64 the lowest being 128 gb.

theres a pretty good deal on seagate ironwolf externals if you have the money -> https://www.kuantokusta.pt/p/12060161/seagate-32tb-ironwolf-pro-35-512mb-7200rpm-sata-iii-st32000nt000

hybrid nas drive.

speed is about half of a standard sata 3 ssd.

and it is 32 tb 🤯.

the euro is a bit higher than the dollar atm. so current price in dollars is 1198.29

about half the cost of a 4090 rtx card 😂

Happy Labour Day, my taffing taffers & hard working mapping friends!

Is there a script command to make a screenshot?
I just though it could be interesting to be able to create a screenshot at a certain point in time. Then use that screenshot possibly in a debrief.
I guess the second question is: Can you use a (in-game made) screenshot in a (debrief) gui?
