Does anyone know Star Trek Deep Space Nine The Fallen? It's very interesting because the gameplay is a sort of action adventure, so not a direct shooter.

(The game itself is for Windows, but can be played on Linux via Wine, the info in this topic is still useful mostly for Windows users as well)

Never heard of that, looks very interesting. medimops.de has the physical version with German voices for ca. 7 €. I wonder if I could get it operational on Linux.

yeah some games need specific wine versions, pre dx9 mostly since these are mostly non dx to vulkan wrapper compatible (it does go back to dx8 but compatibility for it is a bit out there still).

blood 2 for instance uses dx6/7 and needs one of the old wine versions but runs a'ok with the right one.

tbh only ever played one star trek game so i  cant say i know of that one. might be interresting to try out though.

I'm now trying to get DS9 The Fallen working, but it's very difficult. Also the patch install files don't install.

You could try the demo first.

Edit: This installer works:

There's an alternative installer from collectionchamber and also the ripped version from Abandoneware works, I don't post the links. Not sure if it's ok to post this info..

I still have the original version, but I can't get it working from the cd setup.

Look for install scripts for the game at the lutris site, these mostly have preset for what is needed to get going.

Ofc. Lesser known games might be hard to find presets for.

I would recommend this version because it gives the best graphics. There is also a high change it includes the 2 patches, but I see no way to check it. If you use wine directly to install the game you can find the ds9.exe inside home/.wine/drive_c/"installed location"/system

It looks like the game is made in the Unreal (1) engine. I think it looks pretty decent for it's time. I guess it's so unknown (or some other reason) that it never got a HD texture mod.

At this point everything is super sharp, except for the textures..

Edit: I started extracting some of the textures (using Dragon Unpacker, great tool) and the texture size is indeed very small.

aye textures are somewhat pixelated so very low res, looks downright worthy of DOS in 4K 😂.

btw the unreal dx 11 renderer works with this game so can use modern wine instead of the old wine versions. P.s also need this if at some point someone does a HD mod using DDS textures as the old renderer does not support external textures. It can also add normalmapping to the game if you have the the textures needed.

old renderer works with wine 10.2 atleast.

on windows it is probably better to use dgvoodoo 2 if you want to use the old renderers.

if using the dx 11 renderer turn off ASSAO in preferences otherwise you get some really ugly low res shadowing on your char.

hopefully we get some high res textures for it at some point 😉

ok there is one other bug with the dx 11 renderer. bloom pokes through models which looks kinda akward in places like when you look at terok'nor from the outside you can see the glow from the ring lights through the station 😂 (depth buffer bug ?).

I was actually already in the process of upscaling textures and putting them into the etx files but working with the old UnrealEd in Wine is a bit dificult.

I didn't know about this. I have to look into this. Do you have some info on modding with the new renderer?

the dx 11 renderer supports dds atleast and also normalmaps to my understanding but ill see if i can find documentation for it, as i seem to remember it also supporting targa.

you can get it here https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2744-unreal-directx11-renderer/

copy the d3d11drv.dll from the ST-DS9TheFallen folder into the system folder and everything from the common folder to the same place. be sure to use version 1.62 of the renderer.

loading external textures has a directory tree that uses the same structure as an extracted utx file example textures\AesSedai_T.utx external texture folder structure needs to be textures\AesSedai_T\*.dds and same for subfolders so example Textures\WoTTraps\Skins\*.dds so it follows the structure of the utx file.

the unreal dx11 renderer also supports Harry potter 1 and 2, rune, Clive Barkers Undying, and The Wheel of time.

There is also a dx10 renderer but it does not support all the games that the dx11 renderer does but it does support external textures as well. you can get it here https://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/

there is also an experimental vulkan driver but it only works with Unreal Gold atm. and development seems stalled due to the war in ukraine (developer is ukrainian).

i was trying my hand at upscaling the textures using upscayler but it bugs out on batch conversions with a vulkan error.

it does make very nice AI upscales though 🙂 very detailed.

btw a d3d 12 and vulkan renderer is in the works for unreal https://github.com/dpjudas/UT99VulkanDrv

in time it might be adapted for other unreal games but depends if the game has an sdk which quite a few newer had.

ds9 the fallen did not have an sdk so i guess the dx 11 render dev had to flunk it and create import libraries from the game files and just use the headers from the unreal sdk with them. (seems to have worked though).

sadly it was taken down due to some shenanigans at moddb so the renderer can be a bit hard to find these days, and he newer released the source code.

also the dds files must use S3TC it seems.

Where does it state it works with this game? All the links you posted are projects that don't have info on supporting this game.

Edit: Ah the package mentions it inside. Ok cool

Yeah I had the same issue. It choked on a couple of tiny blurry pics, I removed those and then it worked fine.

if all else fails could also use winecfg and set compatibility flags to xp sp2 to rule out some stuff that might cause this. also a lot of other things one can do in it but it requires some knowledge to use correctly.

ai upscaled textures for ds 9 the fallen here https://sourceforge.net/projects/cbadvanced/files/textures.7z/download

some might need some work as i noticed seams and problems with the alpha channel on some of them (planets and such) so these might be a good idea to skip. you can see the problematic ones while loading up the game.

environment textures look fine as far as i can see but keep an eye out. im not an artist so someone else might have to correct the bad ones.

remove these from the texture folder DS9_Logos DS9_Objectives Ds9Spacestation and UWindowFonts. the rest look fine.

the nebula textures are so low res they look like crap when upscaled so its better to just use the ones in the game blurry as they are. some artist could replace those with high res ones in the removed folders if they can make them fit in with the rest of the map. the fonts are actually not to bad but they have a problem with the alpha channel (probably because i created the dds files using upscaled png versions of the bitmap images) so they have seams.

the problem we had with upscayler is that the AI cannot handle textures smaller than 4kb so resizing them a bit lets it continue.

Things have been so bad these days for me...
Just a year ago, I've been feeling dizzy, I thought it was nothing, today's stress, that type of thing, went to sleep...Still dizzy! 9 more days dizzy, went to doctor (I would have gone on the first day if NOT for the long appointment time)
Said it may be Neck Dizziness...I did exercises for 6 months, no changes.
Went to a Physical Therapist, went to another, no changes.
I've asked my doctor for a full check this time.
I hated yesteryear so much due to personal reasons, this year might be the same.
To be brutally honest, I'd rather have cancer or/and chronic pain than suffer dizziness any second longer, especially when nothing helps.
Hard to enjoy Thief when you're dizzy so I was hoping this year, Winter will be best for me.

      Hello mappers and taffers!

Are you still out there? It is so calm here these days and I am afraid this is no good sign.
Proof me wrong, tell your best friend (=me), that you are still here and that you will not go away!

Happy Labour Day, my taffing taffers & hard working mapping friends!
And remember the poor souls who, within the Inventors’ organization, labor under Jonus’s yoke to ensure the success of that very guild! Always remember the hard workers!

Is there a script command to make a screenshot?
I just though it could be interesting to be able to create a screenshot at a certain point in time. Then use that screenshot possibly in a debrief.
I guess the second question is: Can you use a (in-game made) screenshot in a (debrief) gui?
