Crouched Player Hands Mod (TDM 2.14)

@jivo, the original creator of the Visible Player Hands Mod, is currently absent. A year ago Jivo announced plans to further improve the mod but we haven't heard from him since. TDM 2.14 was released and his mod hasn't been updated.

One of the planned features was to have the option to show only the hands (no items). This is what I think works best, at least as the starting point, and this is what my fork is about:

  1. Show at least one hand when crouching
  2. Remove the crouch indicator from the HUD

DOWNLOAD (Windows)

Please note the download includes a modded TDM 2.14 Windows executable. The executable has been compiled by me using official code sources and Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2022. The download also includes a copy of the changes made in the source code, which can be found inside the pk4.

The zip includes:

  • TheDarkModx64.exe
  • z_crouched_player_hands_214.pk4

INSTALL

  • Make a manual backup or rename your TheDarkModx64.exe (ie: TheDarkModx64.exe.original)
  • Drop the modded TheDarkModx64.exe and the file z_crouched_player_hands_214.pk4 into your TDM root folder

UNINSTALL

  • Delete the modded TheDarkModx64.exe and the file z_crouched_player_hands_214.pk4 from your TDM root folder
  • Restore the original TheDarkModx64.exe

DOWNLOAD (Linux)

I don't have the knowledge to provide a build for Linux.

Should Jivo be back and resume work on his mod I will ask Forum Moderators to delete this whole topic. In the meantime, I hope you have fun with this fork for TDM 2.14.

Nice! Two questions though: if you have the blackjack active, which most of us will when crouching, will it be visible? And if not, will it suddenly appear when you start to whack somebody?

Wow, it looks great! I thought it was only about the hands and not other items. This should go into the core game! Have you already added a bugtracker for it?

The implementation in core should be done in phases:

  1. Crouched
  2. Lean?
  3. Listen?
  4. Items?

I am not very familiar with the existing modded code but considering "unarmed" is a weapon, and there can only be one weapon running at a time, my understanding is that the first step for phase 1 is for the "unarmed" weapon to be its own standalone thing, always running in the background.

If anything gets done it should, of course, remain optional.

What do you think, @stgatilov ?

I don't know if the points 2. to 4. above are necessary ;), but I just did some more testing and minor things should be fixed in the current crouched implementation. I don't know if these are part of the original mod or your version, Snatcher, but can this be added? It already works well for taking physical items and reading.

- One or two arms need to disappear when taking loot and tools.

- One or two arms need to disappear when using the flint stones.

- One or two arms need to disappear when opening a door or chest.

- One or two arms need to disappear when using keys and lockpicks.

I don't like unnecessary clatter on the screen, especially like this.

If you want good example of body awareness then check the game Routine. When you find the gun, you see it on the screen only when you interact with it, the rest of the time you can just look down and see it pointed downwards in your right hand.

I recall that body awareness was considered at the very beginning, and was rejected.
It feels like one of those cases where and idea might sounds cool, but doing it now would go against the original design of the game.

But it's not really body awareness, like you still can't see the rest of your character. It is only an indicator for crouching in the same way that you can see the weapon you are weilding.

Is it possible to at least support it in a way that it can be a plugin? It seems currently it needs a fork of tdm to make it work.

If enough people are interested I could make it part of the Unofficial Patch or Snatcher could make it part of his mod. The latter would probably the better solution as a) Snatcher already made this update and b) his mod is modular anyway so people not liking it could just not install it :)!

Ultimately, it depends on how serious the necessary changes are.

I don't know about the core code changes, but Snatcher added scripts to disable the hands when doing stuff like lockpicking, so it should be easy to alter those scripts to disable the hands completely in an options menu entry.

      Things have been so bad these days for me...
      Just a year ago, I've been feeling dizzy, I thought it was nothing, today's stress, that type of thing, went to sleep...Still dizzy! 9 more days dizzy, went to doctor (I would have gone on the first day if NOT for the long appointment time)
      Said it may be Neck Dizziness...I did exercises for 6 months, no changes.
      Went to a Physical Therapist, went to another, no changes.
      I've asked my doctor for a full check this time.
      I hated yesteryear so much due to personal reasons, this year might be the same.
      To be brutally honest, I'd rather have cancer or/and chronic pain than suffer dizziness any second longer, especially when nothing helps.
      Hard to enjoy Thief when you're dizzy so I was hoping this year, Winter will be best for me.

      Is there a script command to make a screenshot?
      I just though it could be interesting to be able to create a screenshot at a certain point in time. Then use that screenshot possibly in a debrief.
      I guess the second question is: Can you use a (in-game made) screenshot in a (debrief) gui?
