The Ryzen 9800X3D is a beast

Recently I upgraded my wife's computer from a Ryzen 5800X3D to AM5 Ryzen 9800X3D.

We usually play at 1440p or 4k on the TV, so I wasn't expecting much in the way of FPS improvement.

Holy crap was I wrong! I don't understand exactly why it's so much better but it IS SO much better. 

The PC was no slouch before, 5800X3D CPU, Radeon 7900XTX GPU, 32GB DDR 3600 CL16 RAM.
But in Elden Ring, with 4k textures, 8k shadows and Force Dynamic Lights mod, many areas of the game would drop from 120 fps down to 60-80. In the same areas, it's staying pretty much locked at 120FPS.

 

And in TDM, playing IRIS last night, in the opening scene where you go out the door and stand next to the lamp and look up, the game would drop from 300 FPS down to 220-250 FPS.
Now it's staying locked at 300 FPS.

Zen 6 X3D and Zen 7 X3D could be insane, I think. Since they are actually increasing L3 cache for the first time since 5800X3D. On the same AM5 socket, even.

Aluminum's experience shows the importance of 1% lows.

So are you hooking this up to a 4K 120 Hz TV and a 360 Hz monitor, or what?

congratz on the beastly cpu  and ill gladly take that 5800x3d of your hands in case you dont need it anymore .

would be a nice final upgrade for my am4 board which currently sports a 3700x hehe.

Both actually lol. Her computer is hooked up the the 77inch 144hz QDOLED Samsung TV, so she got the 7900XTX GPU and the better CPU. Also has a 360hz 1440p QDOLED Alienware monitor for the PC

The CPU, Motherboard and Ram are going into a build for the kids first PC. We're going to be putting it together and they're buying the case, psu and cooler with their money to complete the build. Snagged a 2070Super off Ebay for cheap, they mostly play minecraft and roblox so that should be good.

AMD has a nice $350 Anniversary Edition with your name on it.

probably more fun if they had made an am4 model of the 9800x3d .

the 5800x3d is still plenty good so nice to see it getting a new lease on life on the kids gamer .

the 9800x3d is probably overkill for the gfx cards i have anyway hehe.

my ryzen setup is second hand anyway so if the used pricing  on them had actually resembled its age i could easily live with a used one. 350$ is unfortunatly way beyond my current monetary situation sigh .

What do you have in your own computer?

At the time (beginning 2025) I considered a 6 core x3d cpu, but it was only available at two shops in Germany and usa making it a bit too complicated for me at the time.

AMD doesn't treat 6-core/budget X3D very seriously. Their strategy has been to release the single-CCD flagship first, and then release cheaper versions much later. For example, the 7800X3D launched on April 6, 2023, but the 7700X3D launched exactly one month ago, on July 16, 2026.

Even when they finally launched 6-core X3D parts, they were often exclusive to specific retailers or regions. Such as the 5600X3D and 7600X3D at Micro Center in the USA, and 5500X3D as a Latin American exclusive.

Intel is poised to compete directly with X3D using bLLC-equipped Nova Lake CPUs. The injection of some competition into the market could encourage AMD to compete harder in response, and release budget X3D products with greater frequency and volume.

It's hard to give good advice right now because you have to make a judgment call on whether or not the AI bubble will pop, wars will cause supply chain disruptions, and where DDR5 pricing is headed. But if you are considering AM5 and wait for the Nova Lake vs. Zen 6 faceoff, things could get more interesting. Zen 6 will move to a 12-core CCD, so budget CPUs could end up having 8 or 10 cores (a 6-core is still rumored, but I think that could be low volume or OEM-only).

I (just) found in 2025 the AMD Ryzen 5 7500X3D came out and it's available in most shops.
