Numbers on this forum, how helpful are they?

[datiswous]

I just thought how helpful number stats are on this forum. For example the number of replies a topic has. Why is that important? Does it mean a topic is less interesting if less people answer? It might seem that way. For the rest I don't see a function for it.

Same for downloads stat on files. Do we really need to know this? For me it's depressing and not motivating if I upload a file and it gets 0 or only up to 5 downloads and therefore be less active afterwards. The other thing is that other people can think: "Oh it must not be very good, it got 0 downloads, so I don't bother".

Example:

(this is just an example, so don't comment on what this specific file is about)

There's also a number on views. Who cares about that? And why is it important to see who posted the last post in a topic?

My personal opinion is that these numbers should be removed from the interface so there are no unnecessary distractions.

I just added this to the browser-css for https://forums.thedarkmod.com (locally)

.ipsDataItem_lastPoster, .ipsDataItem_stats, .ipsCommentCount, .ipsType_light.ipsType_small.ipsType_blendLinks, span.ipsFlex-inline, .ipsDataItem_category {display: none;} /* Less number stats distractions */

Giving a less distracting result:

Having stats is always good even if they don't look good for you.

If we're asking for changes to the forum, what it actually needs more than hiding stats is a link back to www.thedarkmod.com.

True.

Also, I often have moments where I find something super important, where the next day the interest is largely gone.

This is probably why I don't do mapping. I cannot keep the interest up.

Well, my friend, the answer to your question is:

We are living by numbers.

Don't let the numbers drag you down, life is too short to worry about them...let alone to get depressed by them!

Thanks. Lovely song btw.
