Check out this post on Kraków and Lviv/Lemberg (in fact, if you have time, check out the entire blog...); a lot of great pictures for inspiration. Here are some standouts:

And the crown jewel:

Sheer beauty. (And imagine the street in this last pic going on two or three stories downwards... if that doesn't get you going, nothing will.)

A stain glass window I took earlier with a bit of persistance, its really quite tough to get a shot which is niether over exposed or underexposed here and not blurred without a tripod... I think I managed it!

Public domain any use, cut it out and make a texture. :P

BINGO! :)

post-2515-12779529326_thumb.jpg

Now I can shove it into my FM.

Very nice, but the light pattern on the floor should be not as blurry (real glass windows look like you can make out the details almost).

...but ...but performance?

(Although I do recall some old tech demos where fully detailed stained-glass projected lights ran very well on a Geforce 2...)

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

The "projected light" is just a texture, anyway. It can be as detailed as you want ;)

Quite right -- My church's stained glass no longer faces the sun due to building expansion. I just had to visit my local Basilica for reference.

And the grand total size of these textures is still comparatively small. The self-lit glass needs no hi-res normal map or spec map. Nor does the light texture.

Looks much better! Does the glass have a normal map, tho? It should, as the "lead" frames around the glass are considerable "higher" than the glass surface.

The solder joints are negligable, but the butts between panes in large pieces can protrude up to 3/8 inch. I'm yet doubtful that self-lit textures can render a normal map.

I'm painting a transparent texture w/normals to frame each triadibus, So it won't necessarily look totally flat+black.

I thought I would have a go at making a model of it and here it is:

render.png

Its ~500 tris which is perhaps too much so I think i will just make a normal map using the high poly mapped to a plane and then use that instead. If you could link me the diffuse and normal texture you would like on the wall that would be good I can use them to bake AO onto and add some texture specific detail to the normals.

Quite nice. I'm still learning creating meshes like that; would you be willing to show the wireframe?

Here are the source files, that should help you a lot more than that.

( a high polygon version is hidden on layer 1, reveal it with ALT H to bake normals.)

I was just having fun, I hope someone finds it useful. You have complete freedom to use it however you wish.

The low polygon version could do with a clean up I did it quite quickly.

Actually, for large decorative models, 500 tris should be acceptable. Due to of the stained glass casting light in, it doesn't necessarily have to be shadowcasting anyway.

I sent you a PM, if you'd like to collab with me on getting this in-game.

Interesting, that doesn't look too tough... I think. I guess it was the connection of the recessed areas to the main plane of the front that had me confused. Looks like it's just straightforward connecting of verts to verts, which I assumed was too laborious, but apparently isn't.

Thanks own3r!

Arteria is a 3D-CG shop that appears to concentrate heavily in medieval architecture. If you read the "About Us" page, the founder is on some kind of mission to CGize all the medieval architecture in Britain.

Too bad it's all so expensive, but fortunately inspiration is free:

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

After Trogir (featured in a previous post), here are three more reference images from Croatia. All depict the town of Split, and come from Splitinfo.hu

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
