Has anyone herad of Parkan II? I just noticed it today and suddenly want it...bad.

I heard Parkan Iron Strategy was good too, and you can download a demo, unfortunately my internet just got capped (went over the 20gb limit) which is absolutely fucked. <_<

Should be uncapped tomorrow, so im gonna get it then. Apparently its already out, but on their forums someone said that the US version should be out in december, that means January for Australia..ugh.

Anyone know anything about this? Russians especially should hehehe...

I'm Russian, heard of it, but for me it is just another half-done game about WWI-II, Russian companies are making them over and over, and can't even do anything proper. I suppose Russians are so angry at America they can't stop making WW games or posting topics "America sucks" in every forum. I wonder when they finaly get a grip on themselves. It's just that they are so bold with their WW wars that they can't stop showing of even in games, thank god at least the Nival ompany has some sense and does games like Allods, Demiurgs.... I traveled into off-topic, sorry, I just hate those hate toppics....

Yeah, i know what you mean. But yeah, at least someone's heard of it. BTW, it's not a WW1 or 2 game ;) its a space game. but a damn good one at that. You fly in ships but you can board enemy ones and fight inside them fps style. you can also land on planets and space stations - which is what grabbed my interest the most. On planets the combat is apparently excellent, because you get vehicles and all, so its quite a damn good game - or so say the reviews anyways.

I was hoping to find it somewhere but i can't, which sux, i really liked the look of this game. Guess i'll have to settle with X3

! Just noticed in the forums there:

Hi everebody.

Yes, you are absolutelly right! It is planned to issue Parkan II in December.

Woohoo! :D Guess i only have to wait a while.

Btw, for those who can't be stuffed checking the review, the game has a good graphics engine on the lines of x2 or x3. Also, it has very good gameplay apparently.

Are those all about combat? I haven't tried them.

What I'm really waiting for is:

-Really huge space (in ELITE over a decade ago)

-Seamless planetfall transitions (again, ELITE - the fact that today's wankers can't pull it off with thousands of times more powerful and capable computers says something truly bleak)

-Something OTHER than just combat to do, but combat also, of course. E.g., trading, exploration (with reason and results!), quests

-perhaps RPG character (or ship, or crew, or business) development, so it feels like more than just a game-session when you play

-First person on-foot mode - go to the planet and walk around cities or forests or mountains, etc

-Ships with real interiors (and exteriors) in flight mode - while the crew (or autopilot, in a small ship) is piloting the course, you can walk around the ship in true Enterprise style

-more I'm not thinking of at the moment

Basically, a REASON to play.

Now, can't anyone get that all together?

  • 1 month later...

OK, i have finally got Parkan II. I got it imported from Russia, so i had to spend 8 hours translating the whole language file into english (using a translator). Anyways, after i did that i tried out the game.

For one, its graphics are excellent - on the level of D3 (though not performance wise, d3 eats it there, optimization is much better in d3. Though i did have HDR on in Parkan 2) and better in many ways.

The planet surfaces are beautiful, and with the HDR the Jupiter-like planets are astonishing. Unfortunately the planet surfaces are not huge, but if there was an editor you could fix that.

Now to answer those questions you had Sneaksie:

Are those all about combat? I haven't tried them.

X2 and X3 are not really much about combat, more centered on trading.

-Really huge space (in ELITE over a decade ago)

Parkan 2 has a fucken massive space, several clusters of galaxies and in each galaxy many clusters of stars, and around stars many planets, each on which you can land.

-Seamless planetfall transitions (again, ELITE - the fact that today's wankers can't pull it off with thousands of times more powerful and capable computers says something truly bleak)

Hmm..well planetfalls could be better in Parkan 2.

-Something OTHER than just combat to do, but combat also, of course. E.g., trading, exploration (with reason and results!), quests

Yes there is trading and exploration, and quests. The game has good combat too, you can shoot off enemie's guns, shields, engine etc - basically it has different damage zones

-perhaps RPG character (or ship, or crew, or business) development, so it feels like more than just a game-session when you play

Your character is only rpg in the sense of better guns/shield/communications array, etc. You can own planets and orbital stations (and moons), so its really cool :)

-First person on-foot mode - go to the planet and walk around cities or forests or mountains, etc

That is definately there, really cool when you land on a planet and walk into port, or board an enemy ship and fight on board them :)

-Ships with real interiors (and exteriors) in flight mode - while the crew (or autopilot, in a small ship) is piloting the course, you can walk around the ship in true Enterprise style

The ships have real interiors, but you can only see them when you land or board an enemy ship. Pity, yes

-more I'm not thinking of at the moment

Plenty of that :P

Basically, a REASON to play.

Oh, there is ;)

Now, can't anyone get that all together?

Parkan 2 seems to have gotten most of it :) Though there could be improvements.

Oh and Parkan 2 is coming out in the US sometime this month.

Please I beg you, could you send me the english translated language file to

exitialisdedicatedserver@hotmail.com

Or at least tell me what translator program you used to translate the file?

I also bought the game in russia, been looking for a working translator/translated file, for almost 1 week now.

EDIT: Yes I know the post is very old but I'm desperate.

I'm happy you necro'd this topic, though.

I was wishing aloud for exactly an Elite+FPS kind of game yesterday, and Dave & Dram just read my mind about what it might look like.

For the record, you guys should try HardWar ... it's the Elite model set on an alien moon (as opposed to open space), so the action gets a lot more focused.

I thought the most perfect game ever would be:

- HardWar like, flying around a planet surface to buildings, each with different functions, buying up real-estate and starting businesses, etc... Also to different cities and bases on a planet.

- plus you can get out of your ship and walk around in-ship, in hangers and on the surface FPS style ... for fighting and story actions (Deus Ex like)

- plus maybe an RPG and a narrative (also Deus Ex like),

- and more sim of building business (like Dave mentioned, and the hanger parts of Hardwar)

- and then you could fly into orbit, dock with orbiting stations, or make interplanetary burns to other planets/moons, seamless entry to the surface, and each with their own environments / architectural style (Orbiter like) ...

- most of the action is on the planet/moon surface or in stations (e.g., dogfighting is honestly better in atmospheric flight than vector flight).

(sounds a lot like Sneaksie's list, but I honestly posted this same list in the Hardwar forum a while back, long before I saw this.)

I had already had a vision of jerry-rigging an opensource Doom3 TC with the opensource Orbiter, but of course that would be an absurd undertaking, and it would be better for a professional team to make the game outright. Anyway, here's wishing. Parkan II looks like it's on the right track, but not .. quite .. there .. yet.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I tried X3 once. Unless it was X2. One of those.

Couldn't get the hang of the bloody thing! Flew around and around in circles in the tutorial level - the tutorial level - trying and miserably failing again and again to fly the stupid ship through the stupid hoops. Absolutely uncontrollable. Hated it, gave up. It's a bad sign when even your tutorial has a learning curve too steep for a reasonably experienced gamer.

I played through Freespace fine, that was easy... space sims don't have to be obtuse!

Real shame, since it sounded like a game I would have liked if only the interface hadn't got in the way. Nowadays I simply don't have time for that kind of large sprawling game.

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

The first game to go in the "right" direction might actually end up being an MMORPG, if just for the reasons that those are generally sufficiently huge and have the funding to back them. I play Anarchy Online (IMO, it's one of the most solid ones out there, and it's free), and to be honest, I'm not completely sure why AO doesn't already do everything people are looking for:

-combat (including individual or team mission instances, mobiles, raids, team mechanics, defend the base, conquer opposing bases, etc)

-things to do which aren't combat (quests, socialize, build a city, manage an organization, run a business)

-vast landscapes, building interiors

-very complex RPG style character development and management

-setting (future/space/cyborg)

-vehicles with flight (if simplistic)

-economy/trading/profiteering

-tradeskills

The only thing that's really missing is actual space between the planet and moon, which is currently achieved by stepping through travel gates called Wompahs. If instead they created space zones (no different from current land zones), and got flight and ship interiors modeled, it would have it all.

Side note: it really is free (both the client and basic account access), and if that description above interests you, I can first-hand encourage you to give it a shot. ^_^ Quite a cool game, very heavy on character development (can't emphasize that strongly enough).

Beyond that, and I can't believe I'm about to say this, but if you're really courageous and somewhat desperate for a pretty deep space title, you might actually try the Universal Combat free release. Yes, the much maligned battlecruiser series. I think the first time I tried it was in 98 maybe? While I could see and somewhat admire what ol' DS was trying to achieve with it (one thing cannot be denied is that he's willing to try harder than other devs), it was also a clunky, buggy, fucking mess. FFWD a bunch of years and UC is actually installed on my system right now, and I occasionally play it. Why the change? First, because it's a lot less crashy and buggy. Still klunky. It's also not the prettiest, but it's okay in that department. But second, because I read the tutorial and the manual (many, many pages). There's actually a lot the game can do, and it's pretty impressive:

-a standard "you are the ship" mode (like every space game)

-leave craft with support ships (fighters, shuttles)

-leave craft with space suit and jetpack

-leave craft in first person and walk around on planets  Very big planets. Not terribly detailed; they have some generic city placements to destroy <_< or command.

-drive any of a bucketload of vehicles

-FP combat (not very good, but it's there)

-command a squad of troops from land sea air or space

-ship interior isn't modeled or shown to you, but it is simulated in that your crew must move through the ship which takes time and means going through different sections etc., which affects hostile boardings or time schedules etc

-crew command

-crew AI (skills develop too)

-ship upgrades/repairs

-unbelievable sense of scale, truly awesome

-economy/trading/mining all that crap

-many planets and systems to visit

-complex stuff I can't even begin to describe: pilot your ship to Jupiter while instructing your shuttle to fly to Mars and deploy mining drones at 4 different surface locations, while being escorted by fighter craft and accompanied by an away team of marines...... (this can all be done with commands or you can pilot the ships yourself, etc)

-and that's not even mentioning fleet command or combat strategy, which so far for me is aim and shoot, but gets much much deeper

I can say one thing about UC: it's a klunky and somewhat ugly and antiquated package, from a hostile nasty prig of a developer you'll get nothing but insults and derision from, of probably the most complex and capable space game available today (and it's free).

As I've seen on ag.ru, the English version of Parkan 2 is on sale from May 2007, so I'm a little surprised that you've bought the Russian version...

I know, but I was over in russia about a week ago. I had heard about the game, and it seemed nice, so I bought it there (cheap). Didn't know the only language was russian/polish...

Anyway I've managed to do a so-so English translation. Everything is translated except some few words. If anyone is interested I would be happy to share it. Email me at ExitialisDedicatedServer@hotmail.com

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.
