that is why I find the death penalty so pointless - it isn't a punishment at all, since everyone dies anyway, and it can happen at any time. That and the fact that crime statistics show that crime rates soar in jurisdictions with the death penalty. If you want to punish someone, give them a public flogging, or put them in solitary confinement for a while, or force them to become test subjects for medical experimentation; if you want to rehabilitate them, publicly shame them and make them work building roads or cleaning graffiti or something. Killing someone wont make them see the error of their ways...

Though if someone is demonstrably incapable of remorse or rehabilitation, it is more expedient to simply kill them than waste money keeping them alive.

To sparrowhawk - well, what do you mean, I didn't exist then? What was I before? How come I just poped out of nothing? I mean, my mind?

To oDDity - well, I personaly want to live because I have a certain goal. And if I die too soon I won't be able to accomplish.

To Obscurus - have to agree on that.

Too late to save us but try to understand

The seas were empty -- there was hunger in the land

We let the madmen write the golden rules

We were just Children of the Moon

We're lost in the middle of a hopeless world

Children, Children of the Moon watch the world go by

Children, Children of the Moon are hiding from the Sun and the Sky

What is your earliest memory? I have a couple of vauge memories from when I was about one and a half, before that there is nothing. I remember very little from before about the age of four. What you are is essentially a series of memories. Things you cannot remember might as well have not happened (generally speaking), and when you die the consciousness that accesses those memories, along with the memories themselves vanishes as your brain cells disintegrate. If you were to be struck with permenent and severe amnesia, your brain would have to form new neural connections, and those connections would be unique, and nothing like the old ones, so you would essentially become a new person. Without the memories of your earlier life, it would be as if you had just come into existence.

It is not so much a case of "popping out of nothing", your consciousness emerges gradually as your neurones wire up to form a neural network.

To sparhawk - there is nothing grammaticaly wrong with that post.

To obscurus - well... I don't remember my childhood much but I wasn't talking about that... Where do I get that consciouness? Every human has one... I wonder if animals do. And you can't reallyimagine what happens when you don't have the consciouness...

You can reread it, and I'm sure you notice it. ;)

Where do I get that consciouness?

From your brain. But that is a kind of missconception anyway. This sounds as if there were two distinctive parts that make up the You, which would be your consciouseness and your body. They are both the same. But to answer your question. You don't "get it", it emerges from your body.

Every human has one... I wonder if animals do.

They do. Depending on the particular type of animal of course.

And you can't reallyimagine what happens when you don't have the consciouness...

That's quite obvious, isn't it? If you don't have a consciousness (yet) there is no You that could imagine anything. Consciouness is just another part of your body like your arms or your legs. It is not strictly required for the operation of your body, but you make a better human when you have it. :)

OK, I suppose we can drop the topic... It doesn't lead anywhere... And speaking of animals - it's not like they need it, or anyone else needs to... Just that we have our moral restrictions... And it doesn't look like they do.

You called him sparrowhawk again, instead of sparhawk! :o

Consciousness is useful for some things, and highly non-useful for others. Think of riding a bicycle. If you consciously think about each movement you make to get the bike going and stay upright, you will likely crash. Once you have learned to do it, you do it mostly unconsciously. Same with walking - you are basically performing a series of controlled forward falling movements and then catching yourself. The conscious mind is to slow to do this in real time, so the process is controlled unconsciously.

Animals need consciousness to varying degrees. A flatworm has no need of it at all, while a dog or a chimpanzee needs quite a bit. Consciousness helps you deal with complex things that require detailed thought, rather than an automated response to stimuli. Consciousness helps you learn to ride a bike by getting familiar with the mechanics of it, but is of no use once you have learned to do it.

As for consciousness in the pure sense of simply "being", as opposed to the functional meaning, well, that is difficult to explain, because it is dificult for us to conceive of our own non-existence. A deficit in our biology, perhaps? An illusion? But if you think about something you know you did, but cannot remember doing, or something you did without consciously being aware of it, that should help you to think about what the role of consciousness is, and what it does for you.

Oh, that, I just can't make out the meaning of word sparhawk. Sparrowhawk, sparhawk...

Well, memories of something I can't remember doing... I don't know...

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
