This is an architectural project in the works for an assignment in my introductary maya class. Is it anywhere in the right direction to becoming a modeller like Orgy? Thanks.(By that I mean talent wise, I know he does alot of characters)

I owe alot to the Thievery Mod team and all modders out there. They were a strong inspiration for me to start modelling. I am also learning Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. B)

All stuff there is about 99% original. I only got the base shape from art history. From there I drew it and made it my own. It's funny but this was the first time I did some actual Subd work on Maya. It's not that bad.

Course when I say original I mean it came from my head. I'm sure i've seen that tree/bowl somewhere. However to create it from scratch has to count for something.

I've done alot more stuff however this is prob the best i've done so far. Dalai has seen my work and well I know that he knows that i'm not where he needs me to be. LOL

Some of my other amateur skills include, lighting, texturing, and camera placement.

Thx for your comments.. It is a simple scenery. I will be making it look decent for when I turn it in. I'll post some new pictures later in the month when it's finished. About Orgy I meant to say Oddity. I get confused sometimes, sorry. Some of his characters are here:

I know what i'm gonna be though, an enviromental artist. I love to look at the outside world, architecture, etc. I think I might be good at creating and getting paid for it some day. B)

I envy you. :) I also love to create outdoor enviroments, yet there are no opportunities in my country for making such hobby a full time job.

you might want to check out terragen - it makes beautiful landscapes, not architecture though.

Is terragen some program for Doom3?

You mean this?

Is there anything like TerraEdit for Doom?

I guess there's not, because Doom has patches...

No it's not for doom3 but yes thats it.

You can export to a few formats from it as far as i remember. I tried it once and exported as an lwo i think. the size was too small to be used in d3 but you can edit it in blender or lightwave. Milkshape (i know...im horrible for using it, but its useful nonetheless) can't import that many triangles but can ironically export a huge amount.

Here are some updated screenshots. It looks ok now. Just a project to learn the program and build things in Maya. (Currently i'm taking a beginner class). I create everything from scratch though so that counts. I decided to put X since it's a variable, which can later be turned into anything. The lights need more work and stuff but I consider it a work in progress.

p.s.

I know it needs fixing. However please critique to your fullest without worry. Those are roses around the tree bowls. Eventually I will have some cool looking garden items which I would like to donate to The Dark Mod. Once it's quality material of course. B)

I don't know what to say, if you say its a work in progress. Overall it looks very bland and boxy, and the textures are very obviously repetative. I don't think you used any architecture references, which helps with belief - those windows look way too close to the roof.

Just say what's on your mind like you just did. Thanks. :) Everything you said was done on purpose. However I do see your points with the windows. This was done for fun and to learn from it. The only architectural reference I got was the basic shape. Like I said, say whatever you want. Thanks again.

Getting better, but yeah- so far quite boxy and the texture-repeating makes it look like a half-life 1 map made not so great. However, upon saying that you are getting better, so keep at it :)

Perhaps you could make the trees a bit bulgy in bits rather then perfectly round, but those vines on them or whatever are quite nice :D

Keep at it :)

I read a mapping or modeling tutorial that said that the top of a wall should look different than the bottom of it. Even in a house with clean walls, the archetecture always has some different way that the ceiling meets the wals than where the floor meets the walls.

Other ways to do this are have dirt at the bottom, or other objects like grass or debris.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
