here's a last update from myside before going to bed:

the maya md5 importer works - I haven't importet any of oddity's files yet, but I tested it with the swinglight from id and it worked fine - all bones are there and work.

2nd thing is the bad news:

the dll for maya7 doesn't seem to work. I did a search on doom3world and it looks like the error message I get is well known. quite lot people using maya 7 reported about it......looks like we have to get maya6

goodnight

(probably would have been good to move this discussion to another thread, but it's too late now I guess...)

I just cleared my temp folder and got a gig back, changed my temp variable settings (both TMP and TEMP in the user AND system panes), re-boot, re-installed it. It gave an error during install, but the installation folder is 448mb and all the .exe files are there, so I decided to continue anyway.

I did the cracking process, but when it come time to type awkeygen.exe aw.dat, I get some error, it doesn't like that address I pasted. Yeah it doesn't have quotes, and I tried it with and without the space. Naturally when I do the next step, it doesn't like the aw.dat file.

Also, I like how it tells you about the space it's gonna take on C:, ONLY WHEN it finds that the space isn't available! Otherwise it tells a bald faced lie and says the install only requires about 250mb or whatever it is. But if you get the error, it tells you it needs 500mb ON TOP of that, on C:

I checked my available space before and after the install, and I actually lost 358mb on C:, not as much as it originally quoted, but still completely unforgivable.

I'm gonna download the one off the server tonight and see if that works. Don't delete it yet!!

I guess at some point in the future I'm gonna have to re-format and up the size of my partition to acommodeate shitty programs like this. Sims 2 is another one that MUST use C: to store shit. I can't believe people program like this.

That installation error is because the documentation was removed. Just remove the option for the installation and it will installl fine. As for the adress. I had the same problem. This seems to be a bug in that license tool. You computer has problably two network cards, and the space between means that each number is for one card. Just pick one of the numbers and run awkeygen again and it works. Took me a few hours until I figured that out.

As for the C drive. I'm also pissed off about that. More and more games atrt to use that crap scheme from Microsoft with "My Photos, My Music, My crap" etc.. You can not change the location for these directories and they are, of course, always on C. :( I already lost several save games because I restored my system and, of course, the save games were not backed up before I did the restore. TDS does this, and Syberia also, but I bet there are more games and there will be more in the future.

I always went fine with 4GB of a system partition, but this idiotic way of system management requires more and more space for C. :(

Indeed, I set my C: Partition to use 7GB JUST because I KNEW I'd find some fucked problem like this. Though windows loves to pack it all up with temps and I only have 1.5gb free left on it.

My HDD is 30gb btw

God damn :) Yes I do have 2 network cards :) Haha, it works now :)

@Dram and Spar, good to see I'm not the only one affected by this stupid "Macintosh" style of designing; "The user is stupid and we know best where things should go."

@Spar - actually you can re-direct the location of MyDocuments and its sub folders - just make a new folder somewhere, eg D:\MyDocs, then open Windows Explorer, and right click on "MyDocuments" at the top level. On this properties page you can specify D:\MyDocs. This is a system variable, so all of windows and any apps, will use this as the place for any My Pictures, etc folders, incluing games that use this foldre for save games.

There are some other user foldrs on C: in Documents and Settings, such as Local Settings etc, where some apps like to store their data, so that settings are seperate between users. And some games, such as Need For Speed Underground, also like to store their save games there.

I read about how you CAN actually specify a new location for this too, but it sounded so risky that I haven't dared. It involves editing the registry, and there were several warnings that made me think it was just better off to cop the bloated system drive image file size and keep a list of games that use that folder to backup the save games for, rather than risk system instability, which was the whole purpose of me going with this image method of backing up the system drive.

@Dram - just periodically delete all files in C:\Documents and Settings\Domarius\Local Settings\Temp (change Domarius to your login name obviously), and if it stops part way and says "Cannot delete file" just skip that file and delete the rest. It means a program currently has the file open.

This is much easier when you just re-booted and have no apps open.

I have three 160GB drives, so space is not the problem, but I need to keep C small, because of that fucking way that operating systems handle the first 1024 cylinders when booting. Since I have multiple OSes installed, I need to keep the boot partitions small. My Linux partition is about 100MB, but then, Linux is a better designed system anyway. *HEHE*

Hehe, yeah I do this all the time :)

I was more reffering to it's prefetches etc.

When I first installed windows it took 3 or so gb it bloated afterwards to around 4-5 and now its.....3.5...hmm...wtf....

Well anyways.

after testing the deformations in maya I finally uvmapped the whole dude and after almost 40 minutes d3 rendered the normalmap of the body-armour. actually it came out pretty good imho, only the part of the shoulderpats is a bit messed up on the normalmap. since I've got holidays for the next two days I hope I'll be able to finish this one.

compare the amount of detail with the lowpoly mesh:

Damn, that looks great, BT. Makes me want to *invent* a reason to include it in the mod.

Again, no reason we can't have a neighboring city-state that is similar to Rome. These guys could be guarding their ships in our city's harbor or something.

Or, if we go with the "our city is on the edge of an empire" thing, these guys could be imperial troops from the capital city of the empire, but our city has long since assimilated the customs of surrounding areas rather than the empire.

well I'll do a less roman looking version later. imho a totally roman looking guard wouldn't really fit into the more medieval, and more nothern style world of thief. unfortunately this will probably take a while, since I have to redo some parts of this one, especially the upper arms with the leather stripes - they turned out quite bad on the normalmap and I don't want to model them all into the lowpoly version.

I'll make them a lot wider, more like in this painting:

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
