Dresses Need Legs Under Them

Just looking at the models and I noticed the women with dresses (Noble woman, and clothed pagan woman) just have negative space under their dress. This would be a great poly save in most games, but in our games when they get knocked unconsious we can't have people seeing a void under their dress. (It's basically the invisible effect how if you look at a polygon from the wrong side, it dissapears)

In T2 they made roughly the last foot length of the dress was like a real dress, and had their feet showing, but above that, it was solid and sealed off. It's a pretty good trick, but I noticed the solid bit a few times when they were laying down asleep or unconcious. If our dress "collapses" completely, we could get away with this trick though.

Actually I should check how they did it in T3.

I intended to make the AF pose with the dress folded at the bottom in such a way that you couldn't have a good look up there at it (not that she has anything to have a god look at) but I suppose plonking some feet on wouldn't hurt.

Oh could you describe that more? Less polys is good, I just can't visualise what you meant.

But feet might be good, they tend to show when walking, especially running.

Thanks for hanging around to provide additional input :) I hope BT has a go at rigging these etc. so that he can get his questions out sooner than later.

THe Af pose is the mesh used for the death animaiton. The vertices of the dress could even be deformed during the initial death animation, so it's a smooth transition.

Feet might look okay poking out from a woman's dress, but I don't think they'd look aesthetically pleasing on most of the robed characters.

Also, what about the missing legs under the dress? These will almost certainly look bad when she goes into ragdoll mode. Just trying to think of things we should settle early on so our animators don't have to redo their work.

Let's discuss this here--what about what Odd said further up? Which option would seem to be the least time-consuming, adding feet or fold the AF mess of the dress?

I'd vote for adding feet and keeping the AF of the dress as simple as possible. I don't understand how a dress could believably fold so that it could never unfold. If you dangle her over a cliff by her leg, it would be pretty unbelievable to have the dress stay folded as if she lying flat or right side up.

Ok...if we go that route I think BT would have to be the one to do it. And that will pretty much invalidate the .mbs that were already done for the noblewoman. But you're probably right.

BlackThief, is that a major task for you?

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
