Anybody seen this movie yet? I was wondering wether I should watch it or not. A friend told me that it is a quite gruesome movie. That in itself would be no problem, but what I don't like in a movie is, if violence is shown just because of the sake of it. I watched 'Saw' and thought it was pretty good, because the violence made sense in the context, and the overall story would not have required it. If Saw would have been filmed without the extrem depicting, the psyholocgial background would still have worked IMO. On the other hand, when I watched the last Zombie movie it was simply boring, because the violence portrayed was without any reason. Well, what can you expect from a Zombiemovie anyway. If this movie is more like a Zombie movie, then I don't want to bother.

Of course it depends on how the violent scenes are done. If they are really as extreme as it is made in the reviews, then I might reconsider.

This movie was solely made for the gore. That was its selling point. Then the "Quentin Tarantino" name (who really had hardly anything to do with the movie) was thrown in there to further its success.

I don't really understand these movies. Where is the entertainment in watching people get mutilated? I doubt anyone would find them even remotely good had there not been the shocking factor of people dying in horribly painful circumstances (given that the movie quality is rather bad when you exclude the stimulation brought on from the fear of one's fate). Otherwise, they couldn't go home and tell their friends about the "great" time they had watching that popular, extremely shocking movie that everyone is talking about.

It's a really, really poor b-movie, definitely not worth the money. Uninteresting and boring story, bad acting, not enough tension, violence and "details" for this kind of movie etc.

Plus, it's making my country look like a dirty slum filled with deviants, whores and thieving children, which couldn't be farther from the reality. Fuck you, Eli Roth.

Don't worry about the country. :) I was there for vacation a few weeks ago, and I definitely want to go back again. :)

I was in Ruzomberok. My main problem was the language though. I speak no word of slowakian, and this gave me a hard time on occasions, so I want to learn a bit of the language before we go there next time. I don't know if we can go in summer, but I really would like to go there next winter for skiing.

As for the story - well, what I read about it, it seems to be the average teenage horror story. A few days ago we watched "Wrong Turn" on TV, which was in a similar vein, and what I always dislike in this genre, is that the people behave totally unrealistic. Apparently the authors don't give much thought what should happen to make to action going, so they ALWAY use the same scheme.

A group of people realizes that there is a killer. They deicde to stick together and call the police the next morning. One of them thinks he absolutely has to get his favourite toy he forgot somewhere and gets fetching it and of course he has to get it alone. Thenone of them manages to kill the killer and while they are celebrating he is coming again because he was not really killed. And the final pair gets seperated, he traps one of them. Instead of killing them, he starts to explain how he was raised in a bad family and came to be a murder, and while this happens, the other survivor sneaks in and kills the killer

I guess this story covers about 90% of all so-called horror movies, and the only variance is in the amount of violence shown, and the names of the characters.

That's why I liked Saw, because it was a bit different, and had a much more interesting storyline, even though the ending was totally unrealistic.

That's the bit that always infuriates me.

Useless bimbo girl gets chased by killer. Useless bimbo girl has sudden fit of non-bimboness and hides in wait for the killer, then when killer approaches, bimbogirl makes a single feeble attempt to strike/stab/shoot the killer, then sits down and cries with back to the body. Killer is not really dead and gets up again.

The total failure of "victims" in films to aggressively seize their one moment of advantage and gain the upper hand is an extremely annoying cliche.

Not only that, but it is boring because each and every movie goes through that exercise. I don't know what I would do in such a situation, but I certainly wouldn't let the body be just like that. Either I would make sure to finish him off, or at very least I would bind him to some bed or something to make sure he can not move in case he survives.

Not to mention, that after such injuries, it would be very unlikely that you would get up and continue fighting, but you never know. There is a reason, why in ancient times, after a battle, the winner went around on the battlefield, and put his sword in the dead bodies lying around. Exactly for this reason. To make sure that the enemy doesn't hide in the ocver of dead bodies.

He did this with that Chinese movie *Hero* too ... Kind of strange, he has no real role to play in making either movie. It's just to get people interested in foregin flicks. It would work better if he'd pick a little better movies to do that, though. Both Hostel and Hero aren't really the best the rest of the world has to offer over Hollywood IMO.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I never saw Hostel but from some co-workers raving about it, I gathered it is just sensless gore juxtaposed with womens breasts. This seemed to appeal to them, as they loved the violence and the movie was also part porn movie.

The only thing I find more disturbing than this concept is the amount of people who seem to be interested in this psychotic garbage.

Czechosloviaka is long gone my friend. :)

It's now Slowakia and Czech. I also can't get used to ti though, because when I was a kid it was all the time Czechosloviaka and since my grand mather came from there, I was used to this name, and also use it now when I don't think about it.

I guess this is the same why people go to a ghost train. :) It's for the thrill.

If you mean this HERO, then you're wrong: it was damn good movie.

I'll say if watching people get ripped apart slowly with powertools is your thing, then go watch Hostel. For most people, it psychologically scars.

Nah! I'm Austrian, but my grandmother was born in Czechoslovakia. I think she migrated to Austria/Vienna at the age of 5-7 because of the WW-I. My parents were all from Austria though, and I moved to Germany, because my wife comes from there. :)

Maybe we go back to Austria when we are in pension, but I can't really say. It would have advantages and disadvantages.

Yeah I'm with Ombrenuit.

I think Ghost Trains are fun, and different to such a movie. On a ghost train you don't sit there and watch someone get tortured, you have ghosts and skeletons jumping out of the darkness at you. The psychology is completely different. Well for me anyway. If someone can watch something like Hostel and get the same thrill as I do from a ghost train, I just find that really disturbing. Maybe those people belong back in the dark ages with public excecutions and gladitorial combat.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
