It doesn't take away the fact that gameplay for FPS has evolved from there, i.e. Halo, Half life and Far Cry, and that Doom3 is a boring, ...

You mean, the FPS genre has evolved from "Shoot everything that moves" to "Shoot everything in sight"?

Nope, the AI has advanced to make it more of a challenge then merely having more health for the enemy and less for you etc. AI takes cover (HALO, COD2), uses flanking movements (Far Cry), more interaction with the environment (Half Life 2).

The weapons react more realistically in the case of human style weapons, not the Alien stuff obviously. SOme FPS's have body specific reactions when AI is hit. FOr example if they are shot in the foot, they hobble about etc.

Really? So what is evolvement of the genre then? I'm sure they weren't bothered about AI etc at the time of the original Doom. ALso Physics and such weren't important too.

They were important, but there was not enough processing power to support everything. You can use early games which try to have shadows, physics and other effects, but of course all this requires CPU horse power. So in order to finish a game, you have to cut features that are less essential.

And I'm sure she appreciates being used as a trump card in your arguments with strange men on the internet.

ZB isn't one of those type of strange men is he?

Interesting, but I believe that the space invaders and such style of gameplay was still the focus of many shooter games, whether FPS's or spaceship style of games. AI just wasn't so important then, and also just mindless shooting of lots of enemies was more the in thing.

No, he means you've dragged the debate down into a quantum singularity of stupidity, leaving us with no choice but to abandon it. Or if that's not what he meant, that's what he should have meant, because that's what you just did.

Serious Sam was the real spiritual sequel to Doom. Doom 3 is just something else entirely.

I found Painkiller to be more of a fitting spiritual successor to the original Doom. It has the similar element of the Hell theme as well.

You won. And ZB is right. But it's quite funny that ZB has to explain this to you. :D

He didn't have to explain anything. I wasn't even saying anything about myself, I was saying that games have evolved from the crap of Doom and become more involving and interesting. Therefore we/everybody has won.

Listen, I know Wolfenstein came out first, but Doom popularised the whole thing and made it into a profitable marketing brand. The FPS that is. It is the father of that style of boring/repetitive generic gameplay that spawned Unreal, Serious Sam etc.

You know, I'm beginning to suspect that Arugulakamehameha thinks Doom is boring, generic, and repetitive. Which begs the question of why it was so incredibly, industry-changing-ly popular.

Surely this seeming contradiction isn't due to Aru being an elitist asswipe.

Wow a loud mouthed brat, from Uncle Sam who can't be bothered to spell my name properly. Does that seem a bit racist? A bit like not pronouncing my name properly then. You're always right and the most knowledgeable here ole Jerko aren't you? You're the ultimate example of the forum bully. Someone who is always right and no-one can disagree with him. If anyone does, then you have some derogarotary comment to get them in line.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
