I doubt there will ever be a time when anyone has the time or inclination to create a complete set of pretty animations for the thief, just in case someone wants to look in a mirror while using them.

I agree. As long as some are done that cast shadows that just generally show what he's doing, it's not a real big priority.

Yes, that's correct.

(Also, we should remember that the thief model will be used for NPC thieves and cutscenes as well, so it will still need a complete set of animations that an AI might use.)

Yes, I have no idea why this was even brought up.

B/c it's a T3-style lean and doesn't correlate very well with the T2 style head-tilt I thought we were going to implement. It may not be exactly T3, but it sure reminds me of it. I'm not about to re-install T3 and do side-by-side comparisons to see how right or wrong I am. I admit that the times where you'd notice this lean are more the exception than the rule, but it's just a polish thing. I understand how it puts it near the bottom of the list to fix, and that's fine. I would've thought it would've been a lot easier to just head tilt and very slight upper-body lean in the first place rather than do a whole side-step.

It's not really going to matter in the end though, because it doesn't dictate where the camera actually goes. The 'physical' lean, as performed in first person...will look correct when it's finished. If the animation is far too unbelievable...it can be changed at a later date.

In the original thread where the lean was discussed, it was made clear that you can't get the range of movement that a T2 lean gave you by just tilting your head (and since you never saw your body in T2, how do you know it was just a head tilt anyway?).

but it's just a polish thing

Which is exactly why there is no point in discussing it right now.

Tilt was a tad exaggerated. I will say, "head tilt with mild upper-body lean". There's no way it's a side-step in T2, imo. I could be confusing it with something else, but I swear I also remember posts like, "The T2 lean is impossible in real life; you'd go off-balance" -- yet it is possible and no you wouldn't.

I tried to do sideleaning in real live, and you would be surprised how far you can lean just by bending at the waist. And I'm not even very artistic, so I expect some trained guy might be even better. You can try it easily yourself. Just place yourself behind a wall and then bend to peek behind it without using the feet. It's not really hard to do.

Fact: Without the ability to see your body, no one knows what the Thief's body was doing when you lean in T1.

Fact: From a first person perspective, our leaning will be the same as T1.

Fact: The only time when you will see the leaning animation in action is if you lean into a mirror, or during a cut-scene.

Fact: Those are very rare circumstances.

Therefore: Complaining about how the animations look in those rare circumstances is ridiculously trivial, when there are literally hundreds of more important concerns for the mod.

Okay, yes, that is what we talked about long ago, as I remember you saying exactly just that long ago, Sparhawk.

Fact: You would see your shadow being cast by a side-stepping leg, too.

Fact: We've agreed it's a polish thing that we don't have time to worry about.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
