Deus Ex 3! Can It Be?

Unstoppable

The year was 2000 and I was 17 years old. On the last quater of my senior year I happend to stumble across a copy of PC Gamer, Game of the Year awards. There it was the fabled "Deus Ex." What is Deus Ex? Hmm this game looks pretty good. As I read the review I wondered what this game was all about. Thus I picked up a copy but it was only a preview. The first 3 missions or so and I was stuck until I finally picked up the full version.

Anyway it was a hell of a ride and definately the reason that sparked my interest in game development. Never before had I been so immersed. I am JC Denton I am a nano-tech enhanced secret anti-terrorist agent. Woo! Hong Kong, Paris, New York, and so much more. When Jock died in Area 51 I was like noo, Bob Page you will pay for this.

Then came the disaster that was Invisible War. This game single handedly caused the downfall of Ionstorm Austin. But that's in the past time to look foward.

If you would care to notice that Http://www.deusex3.com has already been registered then you can see that this game will one day be a reality. Perhaps yours truly will be at the side of Warren Spector when Deus Ex 3 returns to it's former glory and claims GAME of the Year!

I'd be more wary that it'd be worse in comparison to DE2 than DE2 was in comparison to the original. I mean, what a let down. I wonder if they'd round the series out by once again picking the wrong game engine. And we need more HUD innovations! Consolize it! Tell us how we like it. Third time's a charm.

BTW your link needs some fixin'.

I bet they only registered the domain name "just in case", so they didn't have to worry about domain squatters. Or possibly it IS owned by a domain squatter (can't be bothered to check the DNS records). :P

So I wouldn't get too excited until someone actually announces something.

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

There was an interview with an Eidos higher up who said that there will be a Deus Ex 3 and Thief 4 but done differently. Like the whole medieval thing has run it's course. I only hope that Deus Ex 3 returns to it's former glory.

What engine would you guys use if you had the opportunity to make Thief 4?

Then play it differently. DX allows a wide variety of play styles, so if you find something about it to be a chore... don't do that particular thing anymore. Gasp, shock.

That's it though, the game mechanics fell down when I played using my instinctive choice. I tried other styles and, to me, it still felt flawed. To me that is where the original Thief games still stand so tall in that the game didn't feel predetermined and that the objectives and AI would blend in to what ever tactics the player used... that is until the player uncovered some of the AIs flaws. But for its time, and even now, the AI and immersion is pretty much beyond anything I've played.

It's the same engine but with a few new features.

Personally I'd use The Engine of Reality, until they made a better one.

With the way the worlds going, Warren already made the Future of Reality in Deus Ex

Eh, reality looks good on paper but it's a bit buggy. The graphics are halfway decent, but they really need to fix that bug where you can't respawn. It's a bummer, that one...

Does it have HDR? NO HDR I'M NOT PLAYING!!!! *leaves real life (WTF?)*

Well, the HDR in the REALITY engine is only about 1/5 what you get in other games (same with motion blur).

The physics engine of REALITY is a bit buggy too. I hear that the charge-parity violation that you would expect in strong force interactions is absent, and they had to hack in some silly "axion" particle to fix this inconsistency. <_< Also, crates don't bounce around for 5 minutes after I set them down like I would expect, and I can only kick dead bodies a measely few feet.

Personally, I would use CryEngine 2 - it is light years ahead of the Quake 4 engine, although it will require very hefty hardware compared to Quake 4. Or Unreal Engine 3. But then there is always a better engine on the horizon, so I guess the Devs would prefer an engine that is easy to modify and has been around for a while so it is better documented and understood, like Quake 4/Doom 3, although these engines are starting to look a bit ordinary compared to some of the next gen engines that will be making an appearance in 2007-2008.

And supposedly the CryEngine 2 is extremely easy to mod for, and does indoor areas much better than the first CryEngine, and as for outdoor areas, nothing even compares, not by a long shot. And it supports realtime radiosity (yes, that's right, I shit you not), which would be superb for a game set in the shadows, like Thief or Deus Ex.

I'd like to see Deus Ex 3 set in a Mad Max-esque post apocalyptic wasteland, and Thief 4 set back in the age of the Precursors.

Come to think of it, when the hell is Stalker going to be released? Every time they get close to being done they decide to completely reinvent the game...

Forget about Stalker, then a long time from now when it comes out you'll be pleasantly surprised!

At this point, I never even HEARD of Duke Nukem Forever

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
