Ubuntu: "an African word meaning 'humanity to others'" (http://www.ubuntu.com/) Probably springs from the whole "Linux for human beings" thing.

Gentoo: "A Gentoo is a species of a small, fast penguin, pronounced "gen-too" (the "g" in "Gentoo" is a soft "g", as in "gentle"). The scientific name of the Gentoo penguin is Pygoscelis papua. The name Gentoo has been given to the penguin by the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)." (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/faq.xml#pronunciation)

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

Off-Topic: did I mention I want to move to the Falklands? It's so peaceful there, so clean and civilized, and lacks hectic modern stuff and commercials. The weather there is also perfect, rains %50+ days per year, snows, hails, and rains at will summer and winter, no predictability (I don't like predictability) depending on the storms at sea. The sky is always overcast. I hope British folks and Falkland gov'r will approve me staying for a couple of months or years.

As long as DSL is available there. ;)

On a sidenote: I can't get my ubuntu installation to work. :( It wont boot and always comes up with an error "No logical volume groups found". Well of course it can't find it, because I didn't want some. Seems others have the same problems. I have the impression that the initrd is wrong. Anybody knows how to fix this?

What version of Ubuntu are you using?

That sounds like an strange error. If you didn't choose to use LVM then it shouldn't be looking for logical volumes. Do you have any other Linux installations that might have used LVM? Perhaps Ubuntu is getting confused and trying to load from the wrong partition.

So I downloaded Kubuntu 6.10 now, which fortunately was released a few days ago, and it solve my problem. My Linux works now. Now comes the fun part of installing all the crap I usually need. :)

I wonder what I need to install to make accelerated 3D work on my ATI Radeon card.

There is a guide here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

I use the official drivers from ATI, rather than the packaged Ubuntu drivers which have caused lockups for me in the past. Basically you run the installer from ATI with the option to generate an Ubuntu package, then install all of the generated packages, and run some extra stuff afterwards to get it to load the modules etc.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
