Hollywood Soundbank

Dram

Recommended Posts

Today my friend just burnt me 5.5gb of sound effects. It's a sound bank which they use in Hollywood pretty much, so I'll sort through it and check out sounds which may be useful for us. If we change them a bit so they don't sound too similar then we'll be able to use them.

I won't go through it today nor tomorrow, but I'll check it out sometime in the next week.

Ok, so i had a quick look through it. Luckily, it has a track list - what the track is and how long it goes for.

This one looks like it'll be useful for scrapes etc (there are about 16 "parts" this is one of them):

Nice booty list!

You sure those are kosher files (royalty free)?

Not really...but they sound generic enough that noone can really tell they're from the soundbank. A general scraping sound is not easily related back to a soundbank. And a slight pitch shift or something would be enough I think. It's not exactly "super-honest" I guess, but we are low on resources, adn these sounds are all surround.

Sup guys, just stopping by real quick

(As you may have guessed I got kind of busy once I got to England and stuff. I do keep myself relatively updated with what's going on around here)

Anyway, I must say I'm not perfectly comfortable using non-royality free sounds. Yes, I know it can be tempting :) but we shouldn't go down that road unless we really don't have any other choice. Could you ask around and see if you can find out if they're royality free or not?

(Oh, and the sounds being recorded in surround really doesn't matter, since they'll have to be converted to mono or stereo :) )

Ooh ooh! Question. Isn't there some law.. or something* where using a "sample" of less than 10 seconds of a sound is not subject to copyright? That's how all the rap stars get away with it, I thought I'd heard.

10 seconds or less = free! (?)

*could be complete bullshit

Edit: hmm... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_Sampling_License

although it doesn't sound so much like the rumor mill I've heard.

If it's completely royalty free, there should be no problem. It would be difference with a purchased licence like New Horizon was asking about, because there you would probably pay in relation to what you wanted to do (cheap for personal or small-scale use, but much more expensive for a large distribution).

Well, in most cases you need to pay a fee, and then you are allowed to use the music/pictures as often as you wish. I would assume that if you want to distribute the files in a game there would be some 'special' licence. (I would be surprised if every game project records their own footstep sounds for instance.)

Sure, there is such a thing as completely free sounds/pictures, but if you want a professional bank (such as Dram's) I would assume that there is a fee involved.

And yeah, they are usually pretty expensive :)

Edit - Here is a library that has a licence for PC and video games, so the possibility is definitely there.

Yeah, I never thought about it much really. Very good sounds, but probably not royalty free (especially considering its the "Holywood Edge Premiere Soundbank")

How much would it cost to purchase these sounds for use?

No idea, never really looked, but quite a pretty penny I'd imagine.

How much do you have to modify a sound before it's considered yours? If we just dropped the click an octave, would that be enough?

There are rough guidelines about how much of an existing work you can use, but IMO any derivative work is "tainted". It's possible that we could be a bit sloppy with this since this is a non-profit effort, but personally I like to avoid giving people reasons to sue me. :)

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

Well, we're talking about clicks here...is anyone going to notice and/or care, especially if they've been modified? I don't think too many hollywood execs are going to be playing TDM.

It's not like we have any sound effects being created locally, and we need how many hundreds? We have to consider other options.

It's not like we have any sound effects being created locally, and we need how many hundreds? We have to consider other options.

You could make that argument about any copyrighted assets, "if we modify them enough, no one will notice." I don't think it's a good idea though, and feel pretty strongly about it, just like when we talked about using Facegen faces. If we do follow that strategy for sounds, we might as well steal other people's textures, models, etc. and modify them as well. I'd rather not risk the whole mod on the gamble that "probably no one will recognize the original."

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

You cannot receive PMs. Could you please be so kind and check your mailbox if it is full (or maybe you switched off the function)?

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
