Problems Installing Dark Radiant

Just downloaded dark radiant 0.8.1. Installation was succesful with no error messages but try opening the editoe only results in an alert windows saying

"This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found"

Well, I tried to reinstall and redownload it from different mirrors, however the result remains same! God if its again Vista's fault I am gonna shoot Bill Gates... This OS reminds me of XP the first years... Nothing was working on it at those times... Anyhow I just wonder how can a man spend 8 billion dollars, spend 6 years of development and still there are tons of problems to be fixed! Cant imagine the beta version... honestly...

It's not windoze' fault. :) There's a known issue with that DLL missing, and it's in the process of being decided whether it should (or can) be included or if it should be required for users to get it separately. License/distribution issues, really.

If you really need it, it can be downloaded online from some of those DLL repository sites (if you trust them), or maybe someone could send it to you.

OK downloaded! Really thought it was a release problem or a windows prob (honestly last days I have freaked out with the new OS)

Anyhow Dark Radiant 0.8.1 seems to work fine on Vista (32-bit at least)! Means you made good compatibility work (at least thats what it seems ^_^ )

PS: Irrelevant but now do really 32-bit Vista are any significant different from the 64-bit edition??

For consumer purposes, no, there's no significant difference. (Except I think 64-bit Vista has extra security-related features.) Mostly it's just another thing for programmers to worry about (and/or take advantage of).

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

  • 3 months later...

I've got a weird problem with DR (v 0.9.1) - everytime I start it, and also during various actions in the editor itself, a message pops up: "Failed to create log file, check write permissions in Radiant directory" and I have to confirm it to continue. Incredibly annoying :( Tried reinstalling, moving to different hdd, creating radiant.log manually, but nothing works.

Thing is, there's nothing wrong with file permissions and there are no problems on the Windows part. I even tried the original GTK radiant and it works fine. So, how can I turn off logging or get rid of the message ?

You can't turn off logging. DarkRadiant tries to create the log file in your user folder, which normally is in C:\Documents and Settings\Redface\Application Data\DarkRadiant. Somehow it can't write to that folder, which maybe due to a full hard drive or wrong user permissions.

I can't really give any more advice at the moment, this is the first occurrence of this type of error.

A few months later, reinstalled windows, doom 3 & darkradiant. Same problem.

The darkradiant.log file is supposed to be C:\Documents and Settings\Redface\Data aplikací\DarkRadiant, but it's not created at all. I tried just adding an empty file there, but darkradiant doesn't seem to find the directory/file. However, input.xml and user.xml is there...

For the record, I also tried GTK radiant, it stores settings in the same place (..Data aplikací\RadiantSettings\1.5.0) and it works fine, logging is there.

EDIT: Ah, I see it's on bugtracker already. I'd just like to add that this might be a bit more serious issue - in my case it's not the user name that's not in english, but the Windows localization (my Czech Windows replaced Application data with Data aplikací). So this problem might potentially occur with every Windows that's not in english.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
