Composition/digital Audio Lessons

The first week of Spring term just ended & I'm taking lessons from Dr. Harchanko, the expert in electronic/digital music. I'm also taking a graduate level electronic music course so the class will do a lot of field recordings and general foley stuff.

So my first task for my comp lessons is to have a list of sound effects (production list) to work on. I'll start with belcher sfx:

  • the belch (of course, maybe a a few varieties)
  • sight/alarm
  • idle - content (maybe like a purring cat) & other idle variations
  • footsteps?
  • bite/jump attack + variations

Anything else?

Nice! List looks good, I'd probably add interaction sounds: Pain, dying, grunts for Belchers meeting each other.

I'm torn. On the one hand, I loved the 'whimper' burricks would make as they panicked and ran away from you. On the other hand, belchers seem so much more tough and nasty, and such a sound may not suit them. -_-

Update

http://208.49.149.118/TheDarkMod/movies/as...r_showcase2.avi

These sfx are still wip but the project is taking an interesting turn:

I plan on making a video inspired by the Geiko commercials. The belcher is being interviewed (ala the caveman) about his appearance in the Dark Mod & his recent temper outbursts. Scenes will include the interviews, videos of him rehearsing for the Dark Mod, and videos that showcase his tendency to lose his temper . . .

EDIT: Replaced with a mac compatible xvid <_<

Cool! Do you have a script for it, or are you making it up as you go along? I'm quite interested in movie production, so I'm always curious about such things. :)
I plan on a storyboard. I'm working on the mapping side. I might use the outdoor maps I made so far, the Belknap Springs fountain & the Forest Goes On map. Then I'll get the talk studio set up.

Here's a screen from "The Dark Mod: Garden Terrors"

http://208.49.149.118/TheDarkMod/movies/as...elcher2.avi.SWF

It's a fake preview of the Dark Mod that's shown during the interview.

Side note: Is there a way to embed a swf or flv on the forum?

http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=315188

Adding the FLV Video to your homepage

You need a flash video player together with your FLV player. Download Flash Video Player. It includes a free Flash Video Player for your FLV video.

Upload the flvplayer.swf file that comes with Flash Video Player to your server

Upload your .flv video file to your server

Add the following html code to your page:

http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_video_Player

<object width="320" height="240" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/
shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0">
<param name="flashvars" value="file=http://www.myhomepage.com/myvideofile.flv" />
<param name="movie" value="http://www.myhomepage.com/flvplayer.swf" />
<embed src="http://www.myhomepage.com/flvplayer.swf" width="320" height="240" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" flashvars="file=http://www.myhomepage.com/myvideofile.flv" />
</object>

Replace myvideofile.flv with your flv filename

Replace http://www.myhomepage.com/ with your address.

Replace the width and height with your flv width and height.

Add &autostart=1 to the video file if you want it to autoplay, like

Code:

file=http://www.myhomepage.com/myvideofile.flv&autostart=1

(Read the included Readme in Flash Video Player for more advanced options)

http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

- awesome video converter. It converts just about anything to just about anything else including swf & flv

I uploaded that flvplayer.swf to http://208.49.149.118/TheDarkMod/movies/flvplayer.swf just in case ;)

I'm getting more contacts :) Chris Thomas the LA composer and Dan Crall who does some voice acting in Corvallis. I'll be recording Dan for my little Dark Mod spoof in a couple of weeks. I just received an email from him today with an mp3 of his voice work which is pretty cool B)

A little update on the script:

JOE'S SHOW: BOB THE BELCHER INTERVIEW

by

A. Scott Kingston

FADE IN:

JOE'S SHOW TITLE

TO JOE IN HIS CHAIR BEHIND A DESK WITH A TV MONITOR TO HIS LEFT

ANNOUNCER

Welcome to "Joe's Show",

where the latest gossip is

never left alone! Today's

guest is Bob the Belcher from

the Dark Mod! And now for the

host of "Joe's Show",

Joe Schmukenbacher!

Audience applause

JOE

Thank you very much,

Marshall, and thank you

ladies and gentlemen. Today

is an unusual day. We are not

interviewing the usual

bipedal humanoid. Our guest,

Bob the Belcher, is a gas

belching creature from a fan

made modification using id

Software's Doom 3 game engine

. . . The Dark Mod toolset is

inspired by the late Looking

Glass Studios' Thief series,

a game series that redefined

the first person shooter

genre and gave our culture

words like "steampunk" and

"taffer". . . Our friends

from Broken Glass Studios,

the developers of the Dark

Mod, were kind enough to let

Bob out of his cage so he can

chat with us. Ladies and

gentlemen, before our hungry

remnant from the dinosaur age

gets too hungry, allow me to

introduce Bob the Belcher!

Audience applause

BOB

(growls and

howls and

talks in a

deep, gravely

voice)

Thank you Joe, and thank you Marshall!

(Clears throat

for several

seconds and

continues with

a high tenor

voice)

I'm happy to be on the show.

(looks into

the camera)

Hey guys! I'm on Joe's Show!

To Joe's camera. He looks uncomfortable. Murmuring in the audience.

JOE

Uh...thanks for being here, Bob.

BOB

By the way, Joe, I'm not a

dinosaur.

JOE

Not with that voice...

BOB

What's wrong with my voice?

JOE

Nothing, except for...

BOB

(growls with

his muscles

rippling)

...sounding like a pimply, snot-nosed kid?

JOE

Whoa! Bob! Take it easy. I

didn't say that. Do people

generally say those things about you?

BOB

Sometimes.

JOE

So how do you deal with it?

BOB

Therapy.

JOE

Is it working?

BOB

Not really. I am an animal

after all...

JOE

Anyway, your speaking voice

is deceptive, but, I've seen

your rehearsal footage so I

know better. I say let's go

ahead and show the footage now...

BOB

Okay!

JOE

Ladies and gentlemen, Bob the

belcher rehearsing for the Dark Mod:

TO VIDEO OF BOB'S REHEARSAL FOOTAGE

BACK TO STUDIO

Audience applause.

JOE

How do you get your voice to

do that? Obviously that's not

your speaking voice, Bob.

BOB

I eat specialty mushrooms

with some snails before I

perform.

JOE

'Shrooms and snails, I guess

that's fairly common.

_____________

That's all for now so I must get busy!

Sounds funny. It would be funny to have a scene showing him losing temper at work. Backstage talking to a guard and a guard mouths off @ which time he belches on the gaurd who passes out ...

You should name the host Devo :D

----

the vid looked pretty good, but he almost looks as if he's pushing a shopping cart. His hands are 'frozen' in one position, even when his arms 'tug' backwards. (need one more pair of verbal earings ' ' )

I think his hands need to curls some and his arms flail a little, just a little would be enough.

Dark is the sway that mows like a harvest

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
