I think he's referring to the layers of negatives over the lens. Digital cameras can pick up infrared. To test it just point a remote control at the camera. Here's where I picked up using undeveloped negatives:

I see. I didn't understand at first - I thought some undeveloped film is placed in front of the lens, or else two half-developed films are used together to create ghosty images or something. I always thought cameras deliberately have a filter to filter-out IR, and if I wanted an IR cam, that's exactly what I would buy.

It gets a lot more sensitive if you take off the window, because that does filter out some IR and UV, but that usually voids the warranty. I guess the ultimate limit is the Si detector, 1.1 eV => 1.13 microns cutoff wavelength. Beyond that it'd have to be bright to see with two-photon absorption.
