Darkradiant without Doom 3

I just tried, out of curiosity, what would happen if I install DR on my office machine where I don't have D3 installed. It seems to work fine. I don't see any textures (obviously), but I still can edit map geometry without any issues, so this is quite nice. You can still use DR to block out the map geometry and only texture it later. Only annoying thing is that it keeps asking me for the D3 path every time I run it. If I have time I see how much you really can do with it, without having Doom 3 actually installed. I also plan to take a disc with the mod with me and install this, to see if I can use these assets without Doom. Should work IMO. So overall this was a nice surprise. :)

 

I also experienced a crash once when I closed DR.

You could check out the mod directory and use this as your "Doom 3" path (you might have to create a fake but empty Doom 3 folder, then create the darkmod folder underneath this so it would look like a mod). Of course you would not have access to important core assets like lights and caulk textures.

Yes, that's what I wanted to try. :) Are these caulk textures, special textures, or are they also just def entries? If the latter, then I could move over those def files, and document them on the wiki as well. Might be usefull later on, if we try to split TDM off from Doom 3 as a seperate install, when it became GPL.

Do I need anything else apart frmo the original base/material directory? Is the def branch also needed, or scripts? I guess scripts will not be checked in DR, right? Hmmm... def will probably be needed if you want to place AI, but our AI, should be independent from the original one, right? So I would expect that def is not really needed.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

      Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
