Hillarious phyiscs game with self balancing ragdolls

Actually I was looking for some games that I can play with my kids in multiplayer mods, and one of the recommendations was this one. It's also free, so you can download it and give it a try (haven't done this yet, but I will tonight).

Just scroll down a bit and watch the movies of the gameplay. This was so funny I couldn't stop laughing. The game is rather simple. Two sumo ringers to fight each other. The problem is that they have to try to keep the balance while fighting ...

The technique is also quite interesting. Seems that this is part of a robotic research program. The ragdolls for the player characters are balancing themselve dynamically. I really would love to see that algorithm and use it for our AI. :)

Funny. It should be called Sake Sumo.

I thought sumo's were out once they left the wring, obviuosly with these guys it good that out isn't out. They fought the barriers more than each other, and the barriers did a good job of kickin @$$

I like the controls, looks like you could play both players!

Dark is the sway that mows like a harvest

Did you see the size for it?

It's only 87 kb.

I have recipes in Word that are bigger than that!

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Yes. That shows that cool games don't need to be flashy. Of course it's rather limited, but still. The site says that modding will be included soon. I wonder about that. I think a footbal l game or kickboxing or something might be great with that kind of movement. :)

Heh. You'll have to wait for the technology to mature a bit first... they're really not very good at balancing. :) It's fairly impressive considering that this is a very hard problem, but they need to be quite a bit improved before it's ready for more widespread use.

I definitely think that similar technology will start to appear in games at some point - of course games have an advantage in that they can cheat a bit. Imagine combining a rock-solid algorithm for moving around while balancing with a (more complicated than usual) pathfinding routine. Just tell the AI about the environment it's in and then watch it figure out how to move around in it. Shiny.

I too would be interested to see the algorithm, and/or source code.

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

Yeah, I know. That was more a joke. But considering that this is dynamically calculated, they behave pretty human like. If a human looses his balance, he also starts to flail around and swagger. The movement of these bots, remind me a lot of very young kids learning to walk, when they start to do their first steps, or even earlier, learning to stand on their own. :)

Yes. That was always my dream. Not to hardcode specific behaviour, but rather give some rules that the AI can use to determine on it's own what to do. :)

This is so cool - I just wish there was more to it. I want to control which direction he leans in with the mouse, and each mouse button pushes the left or right hand respectively. So to walk forward, lean forward and he'll stagger forward. Then if you go off balance, just look at the way he's falling and push in the other direction to make him correct himself.

I'm looking forward to the modding.

It is out - you were just watching them trying to get back up and bow to each other! Easily the funniest part of the game.

Actually the football idea could be great - people stumbling around and one of them accidently hits the ball in with his head as he falls over. It'd be funny to see the different silly ways people got goals.

Yeah. There is one sqeuence in these movies, where the one guy has his bottom in the air, because he is trying to stand up, and the other guy stands right behind him. And everytime I see this part, I expect that in the next moment he would give him a good shove. :)

I think when one has his bottom in the air, that's his bow.

The best advice for an addition I heard is that they should put some gratuitous china cabinets, bookshelves, and pedestals with ceramic vases of flowers behind those walls.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
