Not meaning to interrupt all the TDS-hatin' going down here, but I don't think it's fair to blame Ion Storm. They were trying their best under the circumstances. It's unfortunate that aspects of the game didn't turn out as well as planned, but such is life. And I have to say, I did enjoy it. The games I finish are few and far between, and TDS was one of them. The fact that it managed to hold my interest for that long is in itself a tick of approval.

OK, so a lot of the new features weren't particularly earth-shattering. So what? Just updating Thief to a modern engine is a worthy goal in itself. Heck, why else are we making a Thief-inspired toolkit with a modern engine? (Well, okay, it's not the only reason - having an open source stealth game for people to play with and innovate upon is another big drawcard, and there are other reasons too. Still, it is one of the big reasons.)

Hi everyone, my 1st post on this site,

I think Crispy hit the nail right on the head and to add something else, they did release a construction set later.

You guys ROCK, keep up the good work.

Hoots7,

yes, they did release the editor, but how many missions have we seen from it? not many. and it isn't because people are lazy either. TDS is, by all accounts, a nightmare to work with. I played around with Dromed back in the day but the Flesh editor, by comparison is just. . . just. . . ick! I loved playing TDS and I especially loved the few fan missions that came out especially "The Bridge" and "The Crypt" but playing it and editing it are two very different things. those people who have had the heart, nerves and skill to make TDS FMs or do TDS mod work (*Tip of the hat to New Horizon) have earned my eternal respect and admiration. our community really needs The Dark Mod as much if not more than ever before. really TDS was just an appetizer that served to keep our interest up while we wait for TDM to hit the streets. I'm not sure if The Dark Mod could have found as much support as it has if not for TDS and the frustration around it. TDS taught us some good lessons and fired our desire to have an up-to-date thief-like game but that was its greatest contribution to our community I think.

One great thing about fan missions...you never have to worry about budget. There are dozens of T1 and T2 missions that far exceeded the official missions. I used to ask..."why couldn't the pros pull this off?" Well, they can, but they were handcuffed by budget. The only budget here is time and we all have plenty of that

- eep!

It pays to be nuts, unless you live with squirrels.

I think that TDS was a "popcorn" version of the previous thief games... It filled you up while you were playing, but was never really that satisfying. I remember thinking when I had finished the game... "Hmm. That was cool." But not much more than that. It was lighter than the original because they wanted it to reach a bigger audience, but the grittiness is what made the first two work so well. Mr. Spector missed that, I guess.

Have any of you guys played Bioshock? There are definite nods to Thief in that game. Its definitely as gritty as any thief game ever was, if not more so. You definitely can't just run and gun. Some parts take some sneaking around and avoiding cameras. I think we may see another Thief-like game out of those developers, but it won't be the same setting as before... (It can't be... for the same lame legal reasons that Bioshock couldn't be a System Shock game, unless they could re-acquire the rights from EA... good luck.) What kills me, is that Bioshock beat UT3 to market, and they're both UE3 based. How does that work??

Because its for the most part based on UE2.5 with just the graphics coming from UE3.

Also, quite a few full UE3 titles were released back in 2006 already (GoW, RB, R6-Vegas), UT3 has taken time due to the content creation, take a look at the demo maps and you will understand just how well mapped the game is - then think that they want like 45 maps in the release with more official maps coming post release. Personally the DM maps are almost too real to be DM maps.

Anyway, if you're interested in the Bioshock dev and time etc - take a look through the video I linked in my "A few arb things" topic in "off-topic".

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
