What sort of twats play unreal tournament, or quake? It's the most pointless formula for a game, ever.

The thing is, that you won't have any more fun playing this version than in 2003 or 2004, it's essentially the same old shit with prettier graphics.

No it's not the same old shit with prettier graphics. First off it's a totally different engine. Also with the editing tools you can create your own mods on the Unreal 3 engine. Which is what Night-Blade is going to use.

Plus this time around the single player is campaign style and has a storyline attached to it. Add all that plus the new game modes and vehicles. Way better than UT2k4 which I was bored of very fast :D.

I happend to own Quake Wars: Enemy Territory and it's quite good. However I think UT 3 is better than ET:QW. Hmm it's funny before I didn't like UT 3 but now I really got into it for some reason? I still really ike ET:QW though. It does realism a lot better than UT 3 and it's more objective based as well.

I don't think that's much of an enigma Unstoppable, from reading how easily excited you get by virtually every new title on the horizon, I don't think it's takes a lot to get you 'into' a game.

You'll get bored with this just as quickly, since it's essentially just running around shooting people, exactly like the first Quake game, and there's always some new kewl game on it's way to distract you.

Correct me if im wrong but hasnt every unreal game had editing tools so you can make mods, also its not really a totaly different engine, its there old one with a big facelift, im sure ut3 will feel exactly the same as 2k4, just with soft shadows.

Is that kane and lynch game really going to be coop or is it gonna be coop like that last splintercell game was where you have a AI team-mate and they somehow got away with calling it coop?

Yeah Crysis is awesome, best graphics I've seen yet: motion-blur, full soft shadows, dynamic lighting etc. plus the game is fairly open-ended just like Far Cry was. I thought the AI wasn't too bad either, it's surprised me a few times; and it sure is fun to stalk them in Cloak mode.

I quite liked Far Cry, and it looks like Crysis is shaping up to be a worthy successor. I hope its Multiplayer is good.

As a side note I kind of thought it was a little weird to have volumetric clouds, I rarely focus on clouds in game; but hey, i gotta say they looked cool on the way down in the parachute sequence.

They're not that good, and the motion blur and DOF are both ridiculous and annoying, I turned it off. The DOF makes everything look like miniature scale when you use zoom, as I knew it would, dof cannot work in a realtime engine.

THE graphics were not as good as I was expecting from the screenshots, but this is always the case. Far Cry had been getting progressively worse with all the iterations released for consoles, with new leet powerz added every time, and it's culminated in this stupid nanosuit, which is just a ridiculous little boys toy game device. Having played the demo, I have to say, I preferred the original far cry, it was a nice clean idea and it had no hype. This one is totally overcooked and forced. They're now just building a game based upon what will receive the biggest 'wow! that's KEEEEWL!' from their fans - and they're right, most of them will cum in their pants over it.

Generally I turn post-processing effects off as a rule; they're not realistic enough for simulating reality. The same goes for HDR lighting. We've already got pupil dilation, and I can't wait till they actually implement the character blinking in-game; so your screen goes black for a split second every now and then.

Whilst you're right about it not looking as good as in screenshots Oddity, I have to say its the best graphics I've seen in a game to date. It'd be a toss-up between Crysis and Bioshock, and they're both pretty close, but I think Crysis wins out. Besides which, rendering the graphics on the sheer scale of the islands is pretty impressive in my book; and i don't recall going through a single loading screen after the initial one (having said that though, you are limited to where you can travel throughout the islands, at least in the demo).

They obviously tried to make the game more serious this time round; using Delta squad soldiers instead of the sweaty male Porn-star lead in Far Cry, and exhanging the fluro-red Hawaiian floral shirt for a nanosuit. I don't mind the nanosuit overly much, it is a gimick but I think it adds some variety to the core gameplay elements.

lol I hope you're joking SplaTtzZ...unless you don't blink while playing games and need the simulation.

The first thing that came to mind from the demo is that Crysis IS Far Cry style gameplay with a few superpowers mixed in. As a Far Cry fan, that’s a good thing to start building from.

The engine is highly demanding, and I could not get a smooth framerate with 1600*1200 everything maxed. 1280*960 with everything maxed and post-processing effects turned to medium (because I dislike the overdone, headache-inducing motion blur used) gave me a consistent 30+ rate with little dips under when heavy firefighting commenced.

Crysis improves in small doses upon everything its predecessor had. Destructible buildings and trees, modifications for weapons, improved binoculars, improved graphics, improved narrative & pacing, improved actors, improved interactivity with the environment (you can pick up and throw chickens & ducks). All quality improvements, but nothing spectacularly innovative or jaw-dropping (except the graphics). The scope of the game appears at a glance to be quite epic, and the polish on all mechanics and functionality is blindingly pristine.

Like the characters name too ;)

And that's how you know it's a "n-n-n-next-gennn-n-n-n!!!!" game; lots of stupid pointless features.

Seriously, how does being able to throw ducks around make it a better game? Who wakes up in the morning and says "you know, what I could do with right now is a duck-throwing simulation"?

The 'HDR' lighting is a con as well. It's not realistic, it's just a cheap hack, kind of like a huge ambient light in doom - a bit better than that, but not realistic global illumination by any means.

They talk about being able to still scale the graphics up in it 2 years from now for future hardware, but I can already play everything on full even at 1920x1200, and it's not jawdropping by any means - I was actually more impressed by Far Cry's graphics when it came out than I am by these.

Still, they know what they're doing, and it is the sort of game that will please a lot of people of a certain kind.

Also, the AI from the demo seemed to be pretty dumb, no better than Far Cry AI, if that. THey do the same thing of just walking towards your sounds right out in the open, and they don't use cover very realistically.

Yes, this is basically Far Cry 2 with improved graphics and a wetsuit that gives you jedi powers, and aliens rather than mutants.

Heh - being a pretty good mainstream gamer that has got quite a bit of cash from tourneys... I was actually surprised by UT3, I am the hugest fan of UT2k4, and with the chances they pushed in, I thought they would completely destroy the game by making it dumbed down.... but its not like that at all. I am very surprised and with a bit of work it could be one hell of a tourney game, even with dodge jumping removed :( shame we have to get rid of good elements to let n00bs play and not get completely dominated. Also the engine seems very very quick... I am very impressed with that above all.

Crysis on the other hand seems a bit of a mystery to me... the MP beta I was part of a few weeks ago made me want to never touch the game... but I did go and get the demo... and once again I am sort of conflicted. The engine really doesnt seem amazing to be completely honoust, its slow and clunky at quite a few things, the sandbox editor is... different... and I feel like it could be a large killer of the modding potential... compared to UT3 where it takes a few weeks and a general "lets bang stuff together and make something completely different(UT2k4 has things like metaball.org, uskaarj rts, alienswarm tactical etc etc.)"... I dont think Crysis will ever have that.

The actual game was a mix of "hey lets take cool elements from every game and throw them together" mixed with "hey lets throw in so many new and out of place effects that are pretty pointless but rape a rig"... that I really dont know what they want out of it. The story seems to be slightly tarded and the feeling was that it was FarCry1.9... that said, FarCry 2 is looking like it actually has a story this time! crazy stuff.

Anyway... I do think that they should have swapped to a more content aware development scheme, a lot of the details and heavy rendering tasks are used all of hte time, when they are not required at all to make it look good. Also the blatant abuse of HDR makes me feel like my eyesight is going, cant play with it at all.

Protip : MP sucks as I said. But I might expect different MP from what you do :)

Clearly there will be some puzzle later in the game where one of the high security doors has a keyhole that is suspiciously duck-shaped, or there will be an enemy whose one weakness is duck allergy. Once you have that awesome feature, you can't just let it sit there and do nothing with it.

Btw, did I mention that one of the TDM missions will rely heavily on balancing buckets above doors and watching them fall on AI's heads when they open the door?

Someone needs to make that mission. If only as a joke.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
