Beta mapper material

BEAR

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've been following this mod for a while now and I am intetersted in seeing if its possible to get ahold of TDM assets (textures models etc). Im not really highly skilled as a mapper, I can do basic stuff proficiently but my motivation for learning to map in doom3 is capped since to me the setting is highly boring.

I have already installed darkradiant and messed around with it some, and I've been creating some practice maps in normal doom3 textures (even though they look like crap with doom3 textures).

I didnt want to apply as a beta mapper since I dont feel I really bring anything to the table (yet), but I would love to be able to contribute once I get my skills up. If applying as a beta mapper is what needs to be done I would be glad to do that as well.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

Yup, applying is the only way, and they don't always take everyone so I'm just saying don't get your hopes up too high. If you show some screenshots of your Doom 3 work that will help, and if they aren't very good then people will make suggestions and you can try to improve your work.

If you work on it and improve your mapping skill for a few weeks you will almost for sure be approved for Beta Mapping (both because you improved and because you will have shown you are serious and will "stick to it")

Alright, thanks for the help.

My problem is that I loose interest in doom3 stuff fairly quickly, when what I really want is thief styled stuff. I'll continue to practice and see if I cant make something that isnt hideously ugly and apply.

Actually I have seen some pretty good Thiefy maps done with only material from Doom 3. Espeically the hell textures can be really good for that. Also yuou wont loose your work, even if you texture with D3 textures at the moment, because the maps are pretty compatible. At least in that direction.

If you want to just build Thief stuff and it's just Doom 3 material that you don't like, I recall that it's perfectly fine to submit Dromed work to show your stuff -- I'm pretty sure I read that. Not only does that show you can do basic mapping, but it also shows you have some experience to fairly compare Dromed with TDM, since probably most users will be coming from Dromed. So if could submit some Dromed work if you have it.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Yeah, I only said that in case you really wanted heaps and heaps of Thiefy material to keep your motivation up. There's obviously more freely available material for Dromed than Doom 3. I was just trying to suggest something to keep you motivated in the process of becoming a betamapper, after which you can get all the TDM material and game on.

But there's probably enough for Doom 3 to make some very thiefy stuff also; so maybe your motivation won't flag in any event. And if it's a matter of learning one or the other editor from scratch, then of course Doom 3 is much closer to your end goal; so by all means go with that. :)

That's a free texture library. You're bound to find some images which will help you make thief like stuff. If you do make textures etc but don't know how to implement them into doom 3 then just give me the names and paths of the textures and I can create material files for you with instructions on where to place them.

You can also have a look at the wiki:

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
