Sound Design

sparhawk said I should post here, so that's what I'm doing

To get to the point -- I'm a formally-educated audio guy who can do fairly high quality Foley recording and sound design (at home or on the go), mastering and sweetening, as well as implementation, assuming it isn't too complex. Basically, if there's a need for something particular, I'm going to try and get it. I can also edit and mix FMVs if that's going to be a requirement. I use mainly Pro Tools for design, then hop in to WaveLab for final edits. I'm also quite familiar with OGG Vorbis and have a pretty firm idea what kind of bit rates are going to be required to achieve good quality for different types of files, so I can be responsible for final encoding if need be. I've also ammassed a few gigs of FX libraries from Sony, Sound Ideas and Video Copilot's Designers series that I can use as necessary (these are royalty free libraries, though I'd rather not try and use a lot of it, as some files are fairly recognizable).

I uploaded some samples of 'appropriate' stuff I recorded+sweetened (page_flip and slide_lock_clack) and files from sample libraries that I've sweetened (again, I tried to only include stuff that would be usable for TDM). Megauploaded here in MP3 format.

A question, though, out of curiousity: approx how much audio is 'done' so far?

Excellent! We could certainly use some help from someone of your talents.

I checked out your samples. Some of those are exactly what we need (especially the page flips and lock clacks), which is great. You've got my vote. :)

We have to be careful about our sources; we haven't quite decided what licence TDM assets are going to be released under, but it's probably going to be the equivalent of a Creative Commons licence, possibly a Non-commercial one, possibly a Sharealike one. Either way, it's probably best to avoid samples taken from royalty-free libraries unless one is quite sure that they're compatible with whatever licence we end up using.

We still need a lot of foley done; many of our foley sound effects are still placeholders. We're better off in terms of ambients, but you can never have too many of those either. :) There are more comprehensive to-do lists in our private forums.

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

I'd be interested in doing some Foley work too, even if they weren't used for the mod in the end.

Is there a list of sounds that you need that someone like myself could have a go at doing? Nothing high priority, just some bits and pieces?

Part of the typical application process is to give people a small task of that nature to complete. So I suggest you make an application thread yourself, and then New Horizon can set you up as an applicant, and we'll go from there. :)

What we definitely would need is, the lockpicks sounds. There are a lot of other sounds though.

For the lockpicks, we only have the clicking sounds. What we need are sounds for the wrong lockpick, door unlocked (success), door already picked and a sweetspot sound.

Yeah. Well, I just noticed that we already have an applicant who wants to look into this issue. Which does NOT mean that we won't need any sound engineers. There is enough demand for other stuff. :)

NH, can you move this thread and adjust the permissions for phide as an applicant? Thanks!

Gerhard

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
