is anyone else using Vista?

If so what setup do you have and what version of DarkRadiant?

I'm using this setup and DarkRadiant v0.9.4 crashes on me, but v0.9.1 works:

Vista Home Premium

Intel Core 2 Duo 6600

2 Gb RAM

nVidia GTS 8800 320MB with latest nVidia drivers

Hm, so it's quite obvious that Vista has problems with GTK and/or DarkRadiant. Unless a developer is willing to install Vista on his/her machine, we can't do much about it, I'm afraid. It can be anything.

Considering how many people will be using Vista in a year's time, it's something that is quite important.

7 year old XP already has cobwebs hanging off it as it is, so there's no point developing it for that OS.

Current XP users who choose to stick with Windows (the vast majority of them), will be upgrading to Vista within the next year. People tend to wait a year or 18 months when a new OS comes out, but they all get there eventually, and there's no doubt that Vista is superior to XP, so there's no reason not to do it, unless you plan on running an ancient machine forever.

People will get it with a new PC obviously, but I can't see anyone other than hardcore Windows fans actually going out and buying it as a retail product. Who the hell buys a standalone version of Windows that will be a PITA to install, break many of their existing applications and provides little more than the perfectly-functional OS they have already?

I agree with oDDity that it's just a question of time till the majority switches to Vista. I think it's overestimated that it will be within the next year, but as soon as the average hardware is fast enough to run Vista as fine as current machines can run Windows XP, people will switch. My laptop is quite decent, but it runs much louder when Vista is active (yes, I tried it for a few days - it's probably due to the graphics card being more active).

At any rate, I won't wipe my dual-boot setup on my laptop just to install Vista again (I only got a crappy Recovery DVD, which means that I must get rid of my XP and Ubuntu partition before I can perform the "recovery").

Maybe if someone of my friends happens to switch to Vista, I might give it a shot. Or when I reinstall my OS.

It doesn't break any applications, at least Dark Radiant is the first I've known to crash on it, and I use a plethora of graphics apps. The only problem would be for people with really old hardware, who probably couldn't get Vista drivers.

People have been getting Vista with their new hardware for almost a year, so a year from now people will have been getting Vista on new computers for 2 years, plus the smaller number of people who upgraded, or were sold upgrades when getting repairs etc That's a significant number of people.

also you need to factor in that a lot of people have been, and will be upgrading their hardware anyway, to take advantage of the dual and quad core.

What's superior about Vista? I ran it for a month and it doesn't really do anything special. I guess if we're talking about XP vs Vista, yeah...it probably is superior...but then again, Vista is built off of the Server 2003 code base, and that's what I use for my desktop and it does everything I need it to do.

A lot of people might be getting vista on their new systems, but a large number of them promptly format and install XP.

Regardless of whether or not hard drives are larger these days, Vista is bloated to hell. I can trim down an XP install around 1 gig with the XPLite application. I want my drive for storage and apps, not a bloated OS.

When I got my current machine I think I got lucky. It came with XP but I got a mail-in for Vista, been meaning to send it in just to have it if I ever decide I need it. But XP runs great (I used to run ME) and I don't need all the fancy stuff that the bloated Vista package has. I enjoy having a fast comp now, but I think if I installed Vista it wouldn't be that fast anymore.

Well, according to http://www.yougamers.com/hardware/stats/yougamers/alltime/, between 20% and 24% of these gamers use Vista.

This is a pretty significant portion, and it will grow over the next months and years. I suspect it will be around 80% within 4-5 years, so that by next year it may be around 30-35%

(I'm aware this is just one site's stats, but since it's a gamers benchmark site I think it may be more indicative of our target audience than general overall stats)

EDIT - On my Keep sites the stats tell me that it's currently (first week of Dec) about 10% Vista, so maybe that's a better indication. Less, but still a good chunk which is growing. Vista's only been out about a year, and it's adoption rate should be higher in it's second year than in the first.

Steam stats say 12% use Vista.

Who cares?

The fact is that Vista is the new version and Vista is what many people will use. DromEd is still being used over 6 years after release. I think to ignore the fact that many players will have Vista is a MASSIVE oversight.

We cannot pretend this isn't happening!

All new gaming machines will come with Vista. Self builders (such as myself) will be using Vista. I understand why you might not use it if your machine is not as powerful as mine or oDDity's but as far as my dealings with it go it is far superior to XP in terms of stability.

DarkRadiant is the only program that has crashed like this on it.

Nobody is pretending that users won't switch to Vista over the years. I don't mean to sound harsh, but what exactly do you suggest I should do now? I only have one machine and it already has two different operating systems on it.

Actually, my point with the stats was to show that it's important to cater to Vista because even just 10% is a large enough portion to warrant it. So we agree :)

Since almost none of us have Vista it will be a very gradual process to work it in.

Although it's a good starting point to know that 0.9.2 works and 0.9.3 doesn't...

Yup. I told you - I'm happy to be a Vista tester. But we'll need others because a sample size of 1 is too low and I won't always be able to test everything.

I can upload a specialised snapshot tomorrow, I guess. I'll post back here when I get around to do it.

Can we move this thread to the DarkRadiant forum?

Ok, I'm your Vista man.

I'm all for the development of DarkRadiant/TDM on XP but it must also work with Vista.

And 0.9.2 crashes pretty quickly Komag. At least it runs. I did mess around with an earlier version that was more stable some time ago though.

Is it possible to run Vista in a VMWare machine?

I have no idea whether this is possible. I expect it (if it works at all) to run so slow it will make your arse bleed - at any rate, I neither have VMWare nor an installation copy of Vista (only a recovery DVD) available so I can't really try it.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
