Idea: No Shadow Shortcut

Recommended Posts

I find myself having to go through a lot of entities applying no-shadow, such as torch sticks, boxes ect ect to optimize maps. And I was thinking it would be a lot quicker if we had a keyboard shortcut you could press in order to simply apply the no shadow 1 value to an entity without having to go through the current process of opening entity properties, adding the value, and changing it to 1.

Personally I think that entities should be non-shadowcasting by default (like TDS) with mappers manually activating shadows on needed entities. This ought to help performance considerably, since many objects don't really need to cast shadows but the cost of doing so is often underestimated.

Regarding DarkRadiant, I don't like the idea of ad-hoc shortcuts for specific properties, but there may be more efficient ways of allowing users to do this. You should already be able to set a property for multiple entities at once by selecting them all, then entering the key and value in the EntityInspector's text fields -- have you tried this at all?

Just gave that a shot in .95 with the latest snapshot. No good, unfortunately -- when more than one entity is selected the fields are disabled.

Actually I really like this idea the most, it would really help people out in improving performance.

-It would work wonders if you could select multiple entities and quickly assign them all into noshadow with this feature. If you still need to select entities one-by-one there is not much gain from this feature, as the noshadow 1 text stays in the entity editor when you select a new entity.

Currently all you need to do is type in the noshadow 1 text in the entity browser and then select the wanted entity and click the green tick to assign the value that stays in the entity browser, then move on to the next entity and green tick again and so forth.

Clipper

-The mapper's best friend.

It would always be a toggle, probably a checkbox in the model selector dialog.

I propose to have it on (noshadows) by default for new users, but the setting would be persisted so that users who chose to turn it off would not need to do so each time.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
