Baalak for beta mapping.

I have become interested in mapping for the Dark Mod, since reading

about it on the TTLG Thief forums. I have been interested in 3D mapping

for some time, but I'd never found a game which sparked my interest like

Thief did. I was terribly disappointed, however, when I tried to teach

myself to use DromEd. A mess of lines with no textures, it looked just

awful.

I've been doing a little reading about the Doom3 Editor, and I think

that it would suit my purposes much better. I played around with

Worldcraft for the original Half-Life years ago and liked it enough, and

what I've seen of the Doom3 Editor reminds me of that.

Springheel, on the TTLG forum, mentioned that Fidcal has created an

"excellent A to Z guide on how to create your first, fully playable

(though small) mission," and I had hoped that I might test the value of

the guide by using it from my position of knowing next to nothing to

create a playable map, and then move on from there.

I'm not expecting you to jump at the idea, but I thought I would offer.

I have little experience with mapping, and none with the Doom3 Editor,

but I have an awful lot of free time (being unemployed does that) and

I'm very interested in seeing what I'm capable of and what others have

done. I'm intimately familiar with the Thief series, and I think that I

could create some maps with the appropriate feel to them.

Either way, once you release your mod, I'll be there to download, play,

and map with it, I'd just rather not wait that long to get into it. I'm

expecting you to say no thanks, and I won't have any hard feelings if

you do. I wish you luck and hope to hear from you, either way, very soon.

Baalak. We will need to see some work samples before accepting you for beta mapping. See what you can do with the vanilla D3 editor, and post your results.

Yeah, just get familiar with the tools and show us what you can come up with. You can get the latest release of DarkRadiant here: http://darkradiant.sourceforge.net/

Once the wiki is back up, you can also learn from it too: http://www.thirdfilms.com/darkwiki

Keep us posted! :)

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
