The AI are in a serious WIP state, as are lots of other things. I think the AI are about at a T2 level of intelligence--smarter in some areas and dumber in others.

AI are, indeed, extremely WIP. They're playable, but their behaviours aren't complete, their acuities are too high, and don't be surprised if they occasionally get flummoxed by doors.

Obviously we're intending to fix all of this before release. We could use some additional hands on deck though. So, programmers, please apply! :)

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

Btw.. do I need the english Version of Doom3? Or is the mod compatible with the german one? I'm going to get Doom3 just for this :-D

Should be compatible with any Doom 3 version. Everything coming from The Dark Mod is in English only, though.

And there is really no time to make a translation for this release. Even for the next release a translation is unlikely, as were also currently have things in non-text form (like some buttons) and this needs code-changes before anyone else could translate stuff.

But it should work on a German Doom. Unfortunately I have an English one, so I can't test that it really works.

Whoa ... keep your lederhosen on.

Let's see if the old highschool German can handle it:

"Yeah, that say I also, but nobody believes me!"

Thank goodness for that, too.

With my poor language skills, I always feel like I'm talking to Yoda in German. ^_^

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Wow, not bad. You are hereby nominated for the German translation.

On second thought, maybe not :P

I'm not sure how good an idea it is to release a WIP. Its seems that whenever someone shows a WIP on an internet forum he spends at least a few thread pages explaining that, no, it isn't done yet and taking a lot of 'advice' on obvious things he's already half way through implementing.

I'm looking forward to people complaining that 'it's much shorter that thief', 'why doesn't he sound like Garrett', 'I can't find Basso', etc etc.

But as someone who's never 'played' the Dark Mod (just run through a few buildings of my own making) I'm looking forward to downloading the demo release. :)

There is a german version of Doom 3? I'd be suprised about that. I thought Doom 3 was placed on the index the day it was released...

Index just means it cannot be sold to people under 18, cannot be advertised, put in shop windows etc:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indizierung

Also:

"Ebenfalls nicht mehr indiziert werden inzwischen Filme und Computerspiele, die eine Alterskennzeichnung der Freiwilligen Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft (FSK) oder der Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) tragen."

Which means if the Doom box carries a "18+" logo, it wont get on the index.

My English D3 box has such a 18+, but I don't know the German version. The funny thing is, googling for "doom3 deutsch" shows a lot of hits for mods that intent to translate D3 into German. Huh?

Looking at okaysoft.de, I see they only sell a "DA" version, which means "english version with german manual" ("Deutsche Anleitung").

I guess the only difference is that the "german version" is very probably crippled. (I never understood why they cripple a 18+ version, but don't ask me. I don't understand many things under about the crazy germans :P

Nope. Index means that there is an absolute sales prohibition on it. That's why they made the rating now. To avoid putting games on Index. Instead they are rated now 18+ and then they are not allowed to do regular advertising, but you can still buy them and order them. For indexed games you are not even allowed to do that.

Isn't it nice, when you have a Big Brother who looks after you? <_<

Wikipedia disagrees with you:

Isn't it nice, when you have a Big Brother who looks after you? <_<

Yeah :( Watch, they will soon extend that crap to the internet - some porn filters are already in place - even if you cannot get an contract for internet access without being over 18 in the first place...

Do mods get put on the Index too? "I was only buying Doom 3 to play the Dark Mod, honest guv!"

No. But then, TDM can never get one of these shiny "12+" (or whatever age they would rate it) rating, because this costs serious money, which we simple don't have.

And anything that is unrated in Germany, is automatically 18+. (Don't laugh, they really create such non-sense laws...)

There is an exception (for now) for things that are not shipped via a physical disk, so downloads are ok. I think also there were some concerns about stuff with included games, it would be pretty funny if Ubuntu was 18+ in Germany because it contains a few unrated games. Don't know if this is an official exception, or just nobody tried to enforce it yet.

Also, I don't know how game magazines handle that stuff. Maybe they get a rating for each of their disks?

Same in the UK as far as I know. Manhunt 2 was not given a rating, which effectively prohibited it from sale.

I was rather hoping it would be a publicity stunt, whereby they would get the game banned and then distribute it online as a download, but they didn't.

There are actually multiple versions of the german computermagazines. In stores you only get the versions without any age requirements. If you want to have the 16+ or 18+ version, you have to verify, that you are of apropriate age and have to get yourself a subscription. AWSOME!! :) But hey, I am actually a little happy about all that strict rating stuff here in germany. Today's content has become so violent, that I wouldn't want my kids (if I get some, that is^^) watching that stuff.

Sparhawk, me thinks Tels is right. I also still know the times when Index meant "forbidden", but today it's similar to 18+ media. As a substitute, media can still be confiscated. It's really forbidden then. You have to release some reeeeally politically incorrect stuff to get your work confiscated though... :)

Don't want to go down the route arguing with someone who has kids, but all that "protecting kids" stuff goes too far if it impacts adults without at the same time really protecting kids. But thats offtopic.

Hah, you think so... unfortunately, whenever they "forbid" an organization for whatever reasons (usually because the are "verfassungsfeindlich"), they also forbid their signs, mottos, and so on. (This means on friday the judge says "this organisation is forbidden", and on monday they raid their offices and find all "forbidden" stuff - because nobody had enough time to get rid of their now suddenly forbidden uniforms, flags and promotional material...

There is a big book of signs and patterns that are now forbidden, and it is scary seeing what common stuff is in there. (or at least from the few cases I followed)

More scary is that I don't even know how I could access this book and see that f.i. the logo I design doesn't accidently match too similiar to a logo of an organisation that I never heard of, but is forbidden.

Censorship never really works...*sigh*

So TDM would only be for subscribes in Germany? Ow, I don't even know anyone who subscribes to a game magazine anymore. It also means I couldn't get a disk with TDM on it - and I want one just for bragging :)

Don't want to go down the route arguing with someone who has kids

And that is exactly the problem. Any amount of authoritarian fascist bullshit can be rammed through in the interests of "protecting the children", and everybody is too afraid of objecting because of the widely-held social belief that Parents Know Best and should have de-facto power to tell everybody else how to live their lives in order to "protect the children".

(Not saying that STiFU holds that belief, it's just a general comment).

Well, I am no parent, but still, I think children have to be protected. And its not like Tels says, that adults suffer because of this protection. NO, we still get everything we want and even better: Commercial free. :D The problem is just that not all parents are conscientious enough to protect their children of dangerous information and pictures. And since there is no such thing as a parenting-license I say our state has to step in where some/most parents fail.

It's funny cause I used to share your oppinion, but the moment when my girlfriend was late a week, my oppinion about kids and kid education totally changed. I am happy it was just a hormone disturbance though... ;)

But Tels, I think Mods and so on in magazines are still alowed as long as they don't release any (violent) pictures to public along the way. I mean if you're under 16/18 you cannot own the game, hence you can't play the mod and so the age requirement is still fulfilled. At least that's my logical argumentation, I am not quite sure how much truth is in there though.

As long as that is indeed the case, and censorship does not apply to adults, then I have no problem. In most cases however, censorship does extend to the lives of adults, either because the laws are "accidentally" drawn too broadly, or because $SOMETHING is so dangerous that we need to prevent anybody from seeing it just in case a kid happens to look over their shoulder as they do so.

dangerous information and pictures.

 WTF? Are you a representative of the Chinese Government or something?

Don't believe the lies the authorities tell you. Nobody has ever been endangered by information. It's an excuse they use in order to impose ever-expanding censorship "for your own protection" which is actually only intended to protect them.

Well I was only 8 years old when the first Doom came out and all that violence hasn't had any effect on me! I'm far more concerned about the fast food adverts that children watch.

Same here.

Man, I just want to go up to Ronald McDonald and punch him square on his stupid, clown face.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
