Troubleshooting Thief's Den in Linux

Just wanted to test it out in Linux. I have Doom 3 and the expansion installed, and I know they're fine I actually just finished the expansion about a week ago. When I follow the instructions in the wiki, the screen goes black as it changes the resolution, I very briefly see the Dark Mod splash screen, and then it disappears.

I'm using 64 bit Ubuntu. Since I can play regular Doom 3, I assume all my 32 bit libaries are in good order. I have libmng1 installed, and I installed libdevil1c2. I did see in the error at the end

dlopen '/home/doug/.doom3/thiefs_den/gamex86.so' failed: libIL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

but /home/doug/.doom3/thiefs_den/gamex86.so does exist, and libIL.so.1 does exist as well, in /usr/lib, so I'm not sure what it can't find, if it's libIL.so.1, where does it want it to be?

Sys_Error: couldn't load game dynamic library

If you run Ubuntu, you need to have the 32bit variants of these libraries, as both Doom3 and TDM are only 32bit variants. And the 32bit library needs to go into /lib32 or /usr/lib32 (depending on your preference).

Regular D3 does not need libIL AFAIK, that's why it would run but not TDM.

Anyway, you can use "ldd" to check what libraris something would load:

te@te:~/.doom3/darkmod$ ldd gamex86.so
	linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
	libIL.so.1 => /usr/lib/libIL.so.1 (0xf737b000)
	libboost_filesystem-gcc41-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 => /lib32/libboost_filesystem-gcc41-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 (0xf736e000)
	libboost_thread-gcc41-mt-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 => /lib32/libboost_thread-gcc41-mt-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 (0xf7360000)
	libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.6 (0xf7276000)
	libm.so.6 => /lib32/libm.so.6 (0xf724f000)
	libgcc_s.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xf7243000)
	libc.so.6 => /lib32/libc.so.6 (0xf7102000)
	libpng12.so.0 => /usr/lib32/libpng12.so.0 (0xf70df000)
	libjpeg.so.62 => /usr/lib32/libjpeg.so.62 (0xf70bf000)
	libtiff.so.4 => /usr/lib32/libtiff.so.4 (0xf706d000)
	libmng.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libmng.so.1 (0xf6fff000)
	libz.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libz.so.1 (0xf6feb000)
	librt.so.1 => /lib32/librt.so.1 (0xf6fe2000)
	libpthread.so.0 => /lib32/libpthread.so.0 (0xf6fca000)
	/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x56555000)
	liblcms.so.1 => /usr/lib32/liblcms.so.1 (0xf6f9c000)

If any line says "not found", you need that library, too.

Hope this helps.

PS: There is the FAQ entry for 64bit systems:

http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php/Thief%27s_Den#FAQ

If this entry doesn't help you, please post again so we can fix it :)

  • Since you cannot install 32 bit libraries on a 64 bit system with the normal package manager, you should use getlibs to install libdevil and libmng:

getlibs libdevil1c2

getlibs libmng

AHH, I get it, I just skipped that question because I figured my 32 bit libraries were fine, but yeah I get it the libdevil stuff must be 64 bit and I need to somehow get 32 bit versions of them I'm guessing... I've never heard of this getlibs prog, I'll look into it and post back if I figure anything out.

It works now thanks, sorry for being a FAQ skipping troll hehe. I did read the FAQ! I just didn't think that question held my answers. You should know though, and maybe update the wiki, the commands :

getlibs libdevil1c2

getlibs libmng

did not work. I installed the deb from the forum link, and then I had to type:

getlibs libIL.so.1

getlibs libmng.so.1

Thanks!

Ah, ok I will adjust the wiki - AFAIR, I put them commands there after reading them in some forum without trying them here :)

Enjoy Thief's Den :D

I'm having 32bit library woes in my 64bit Arch install. The FAQ solution of using getlibs only works in debian based distributions. There is no libdevil1c2 or libdevel1 package in the Arch repository. So I downloaded libdevil1_1.6.7-4_ia64.deb and extracted the contents, then placed libIL.so.1 in /usr/lib/ and hoped - however, the dark mod aborted as usual with this error:

dlopen '/root/.doom3/thiefs_den/gamex86.so' failed: libIL.so.1: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

Any ideas? I'm no Linux expert, so any help is appreciated. At this point, I'm thinking either an alternate lib, or hunting down the source and compiling this lib myself?

What distribution are you using, couldn't get that from your post?

As for the lib:

libdevil1_1.6.7-4_ia64.deb

That would be the 64bit version. However, Doom3 and thus TDM are 32bit, so you need the 32bit version, and place that into /usr/lib32 (if that exists on your distribution).

I guess it isn't well known: the distro is Arch Linux.

Ahah! I will look for the ia32 version and report back. Thanks Tels, I can't believe I didn't see that!

Oh, what a unfortunate name, never heard of it and thought you meant "arch" as in "architecture" :)

I've fetched 32 bit versions of every library the dark mod complained about from .deb packages. These are:

libIL.so.1

libtiff.so.4

libmng.so.1

liblcms.so.1

However, trying to launch the dark mod fails with the following output and locks up my twm session, forcing me to restart X:

I've fetched 32 bit versions of every library the dark mod complained about from .deb packages. These are:

libIL.so.1

libtiff.so.4

libmng.so.1

liblcms.so.1

However, trying to launch the dark mod fails with the following output and locks up my twm session, forcing me to restart X:

Help?

The error message isn't very helpful, I am afraid. Could you please run:

ldd gamex86.so

in your darkmod directory and post the output here?

Btw:

copy gamex86.so to /root/.doom3/thiefs_den/gamex86.so

I guess this means you run as root user. Have you tried runningTDM and/or D3 as non-root user?

(Running as root user is not a good idea from a security point of view, anyway, but it also might create complications for TDM)

      I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

      @TheUnbeholden
      You cannot receive PMs. Could you please be so kind and check your mailbox if it is full (or maybe you switched off the function)?

      I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
