I don't think anyone thinks they would use an older engine, but perhaps something other than idtech5. But I doubt it will be something different, most likely idtech5

The only problems with this engine are: Lack of gradient / alpha support with lighting | Lack of texture blend | light calculations VS performance | small physics issues

 

Everything else is perfect :]

Great! Now the Dark Mod II has an engine in waiting

Heh, damn right! but by then we will have customized our branch of the tech4 engine code it may well be doom3.5.

 

There are new Doom 4 artworks and (possibly) screenshots available. Enjoy!

Now if we could have some of those textures and the soft lighting we would be set, some of those images are just shockingly stunning!

Nice environmental shots, but they don't seem so advanced visually. Or have we reached a stage where improvements no longer seem striking? Hm.

The first few pictures gave me a heavy Metro 2033 + Borderlands vibe. This is not a bad thing.

It's a shame that most of the environment will probably as static as in Rage. Looks pretty, but breaks down as soon as you fire a shot into something or throw a moveable around.

Ohh I never played this, how does it comepared to metro and stalker etc..? I assume its an oldish game so will be cheap enough etc..

 

Short answer: It doesn't.

Longer answer: I mean it's a game where you shoot stuff. Other than that, it doesn't feel like stalker or metro. Even remotely. It's more light-hearted and cartoony too, so it definitely doesn't have the same atmosphere.

 

Regarding Doom4, however. I try not to get excited, I can't expect it to be anything short of an iD FPS, meaning it will be like RAGE was... Could be different. Odds are against.

Not that I mind, I liked RAGE. But I'd much rather see a new Quake instead of a new Doom, seeing as how the original Doom idea doesn't hold up these days.

I don't know. Precious few games in the last few years have tried the original Doom idea. I wouldn't mind to see a game that tried. Not even NecroVisioN, the most entertaining FPS I have played in a while could come close.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
