Need Any More Voice Actors Or Writers?

I've been a big Thief fan since the beginning, and I would love to assist Dark Mod in any capacity necessary. I don't actually have direct voice-acting experience, but I have been a vocalist and singer for a little over ten years.

Most of what I've done has been in death metal bands; however, I'd love to provide some clean vocals for such a project, perhaps voices for Pagan-type characters. Even some dark, villain style stuff, raspy or beast-like voices, I can do. Ah heck, I would be happy to do some Stupid Guard stuff, too. :D

I'm also an experienced Tribes 2 modder (nothing you would recognize, however, as I kept it mostly inhouse as educational stuff), Python programmer (intermediate), and creative writer. I'm also learning C and C++, though my strongest skills are in Python. And, just as an FYI, I'm a GNU/Linux system administrator with quite a bit of experience (my shell and Python scripts probably total in the 4000 lines area). Of course, that doesn't mean I don't do Windows.

I understand some of the design process and I feel that I can contribute much to story development and immersion. At the very least, I would enjoy working as a play tester (or "quality assurance specialist" as it's called).

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of what you all are working on. Dark Mod looks awesome so far.

Thanks,

Richard aka Draco

p.s. Sheesh, this became an essay. To put it simply, I'll do just about anything in this project.

I don't know about the other things, but that may come in handy. :)

I don't have that much, but I certainly could use some stuff in that area. :)

@ Fingernail: Actually no, as most of my stuff has been lost in the apartment shuffle and the sands of time, but I can get some made. What I'll do is work up a small script (the acting kind), and get some stuff recorded.

@ Sparhawk: I can certainly test anything on Linux, and I may be able to help with some coding there, if necessary. What kinds of stuff are you looking for on the Linux side?

heh Man, I've moved so many times I can't remember where any of my old stuff is. As far as what my band sounded like think of it as a cross between My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost on the music side, with Bolt Thrower-style vocals (that was from an actual review done for our demo). Melodic, and heavy as hell. Ah, the good old days . . .

It may sound corny, but I believe that my taste in music (now more like Bathory, Arcanum, and Black & Viking Metal), my roleplaying experience, and my love of zombie movies, combined with my dark sense of humor, makes me well-suited for a dark fantasy-style game. I didn't really get into the demon-infested story of Doom 3, but I very much enjoy what id did with the visuals.

When I heard that someone was working on a Thief conversion/mod for D3, my jaw hit the floor. I thought "oh, hell yeah!"

I'm trying to get some more general game design experience, because I'm trying to convince some work buddies to help me design either a Mech game (I love Battletech, too), or work on a FPS based on an old RPG called Living Steel (scifi). We will be utilizing the Torque engine (I did look at others, but it seems that Torque is the best suited for what I'm thinking), and I hope that the new graphics stuff for Torque lives up to the hype. It's nowhere near the graphics capability that Doom 3 has, but that level of power is not necessary for a 'mech game, or a FPS that takes place primarily outdoors.

In the meantime, I wanna start getting my feet wet in projects that I like. Just tell me what you need, and I'll see if I can do it.

Nothing fancy really. I could even do it myself, but I have so much other stuff to do, that I don't have time for it. I like coding in Python over Perl anytime. :)

Currently I have a server runnig for our mod. It provides among other things CVS services and everybody on the team gets emai notification. I just wrote a very simple script for that because I just wanted it to get working, but it could use some improvements. Like making a daily digest for some members. Or some other thing would be to write a little webinterface where teammmebers can upload their ssh key themselve because currently I have to do this all manually. Stuff like that.

I guess it's not THAT much to do and I don't know if you would be interested in something like that.

Hey there RhunDraco,

Thanks for dropping in. I'm voice actors in person from where I live so they can be recorded with my home studio. So all voice acting production is inhouse for the Dark Mod editing tools, unfortunately we don't have a position there. It does appear you have much to offer in other areas though and I'm sure we could use your assistance. :)

@ Sparhawk: Are the email notifications only for when CVS is updated, or is it a group mailing list? Setting up Mailman to handle a mailing list is something that I could do, as it's an awesome Python-driven system that features digest capability and I've set it up on my GNU/Linux server at home. I'm sure that I could write something that would get sent out in the daily digest for when CVS changes or something like that.

Uploading of ssh keys could be a pretty simple ftp cgi, depending on your needs. Do you use ssh for secure CVS access, then?

@ New Horizon: hey, I had to ask. Keep me in mind, though, if you find the project needing anything for voice. hmm, I should probably just record something anyway, so when I say I can do it, I can prove it. :D

I'm also available as a proofreader, writer, and play tester. Especially for this project.

Don't worry, it's not a matter of not believing you can do it. I absolutely believe you can. I'm just taking a very organic approach to all the voice sets being included in our editing toolset. :)

All of the actors have worked in Theatre/ Television and are local. Once I have them all assembled I am going to have them get together to discus the characters they will be playing. This gives them the visual contact they need to help them create their characters. :) I'm being very hands on as I want the voices to be more than just voices, I want the relationships that develop between the actors to show through and make the onscreen characters live and breath. :)

It's not a mailing list. I just wrote a simple python script that is called from CVS whenever somebody checked something in and it will directly send mail via gmx.net (my mail host).

I'm sure that I could write something that would get sent out in the daily digest for when CVS changes or something like that.

That would be great. Only problem is, that this is only a small task and I don't have that much to do for you. :) Unless we find something else to occupy you, that is.

Yes. And currently I create a new user, install the key, add it to the cvs group and add the mail adress to the list. All manually. What would be much more better, would be something where this would be kind of automated.

@ New Horizon: I'm in Colorado, in the USA. A little bit away from where you are.

@ Sparhawk: Hmm, I haven't dug too deeply into CVS yet, though I know enough to be an operator. I'm gonna take a look at some stuff there and let you know. As for a web interface, I'll let you know as soon as I can.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
