Hello all,

I've had this city map I've been working on and off on, and right now, I'm really sure what I'm going to do with it.

The pictures are here here

Would appreciate any advice, critiques or suggestions, Although these pictures aren't the full scope of my map, they're the parts with the most detail/development so far, so let me know what you think, I know its very rough, so some feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Given the limited Den resources they are very promising. There might be a few tips I could make but a lot depends on what you want to do with the map. It sounds reasonably extensive so I presume you don't just want to leave it as a test piece but want to develop it into a full working mission? Maybe you want to apply for betamapper status so you can use the full resources.

Yes, my goal is to turn this into a mission.

Would this be acceptibable as a beta mapper application?

I think what you should do is go through and re-work it. There's a ton of stretched textures and bland areas. For example if you look at photo 15. You can see the building with the wood trim is extremely stretched and there is no trim along the bottom of the building connecting the building to the ground. The building behind it is also extremely stretched. The window on the right in this picture is to boxy and should have some sort of trim around it. The ground is too square and stretched again. The lights look somewhat out of place largely due to this problem. A patch or decals could help solve this problem.

On the interior in picture one, there is to much stretching of textures again. I can see mis-aligned textures on the roof where the beams go across. Picture 3 is too dark, it needs either more light from torches or from ambience, and picture four has torched which should have the noshadow 1 parameter applied to them. Picture six, you could make your own wine rack using brushed instead of the shelves, and again no shadow on those torches.

You should probably setup a large ambient light to fix much of the lighting issues as well.

There's also quite a bit of areas which are boxy, featuring plain 90 degree corners ect. Having smoothed or varied corners would help change things up.

With all this info you may be discouraged, but I'm not trying to say it's a bad map, I'm just saying what can be improved on it :) So don't get discouraged!

In addition to what jdude has said, have you worked through the A to Z guide at http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php/...e_Start_Here%21

In particular, many walls such as simple bricks, can have sharp corners while other textures look better if the corners are softened with a bevel : http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php/...Corners:_Bevels.

Above all, keep going and post here and give the team a day or two for others to get a chance to have a look at your work. You are on the right track.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
