Hi there,

I created a new map which you can play with the Thiefs Den Demo.

 

It's very short and simpel but i'll extend it by time.

 

Plot (for now):

"I've heared that Adney Schellden a guy who works for the rich Lord Julian brought a message to Dougal. Dougal is a thief, of course he is not half as good as me. But he is a thief so I'm sure there is something in this message which could be interesting for me, too. We'll see."

To play extract the .zip file and copy the content to your tiefs_den folder.

Start Thiefs Den and open the console.

Type in: dmap closemouthed_shadows_01.map

Wait.

Open the console again and type in: map closemouthed_shadows_01

Have fun!

 

To view your objectives press ESC ingame and click on Objectives in the menu.

Wow, I never expected to see a fully playable map from a non-team-member so soon. That's awesome. :) I will definitely play this when I get a chance.

I just tried it out myself and it is a VERY good start indeed. :)

 

Be careful with your lighting though, all your candles are super bright. It also appears that you need a very low level ambient to remove the pitch blackness. Lighting your level in dark mod will take some practice, but the first thing you should do is to put an ambient_nofall...or ambientnfo, can't remember what it's named...around your entire level. Adjust it so that it's just enough to not affect the light gem, and to make the shadows not appear pitch black. Adjust the rest of your lighting from there. It will give you much more realistic looking lighting. :)

Cool. :) There is a "but" though -- I get very bad performance from it (note that I am on my work system, which doesn't have a good video card). I'm talking 2 FPS. But! Once I added visportals to each of the doorways, the start is > 4 times higher, at 9 FPS. Just something to keep in mind: even in small maps, visportals not only help speed things up but are also needed (like Thief's room brushes) for correct sound propagation.

You are right i just saw how big the candel light radius is. The map has an ambientnfo. This shouldn't be the problem, should it? Do you think it will be enough to lower the candel light radius? Which radius is good?

 

I've got another question. I want the door to open to the other side. In the same room but to the wall an not in the room. How can I manage that? I tried the mirror function but it didn't work.

The radius and the color of the light will play a role. Experiment with both to see what happens. :)

was Half-Life 1 times ;) . And darkradiant is way different from worldcraft. But your wiki is very good!

 

Thats where I came from. I used to do HL 1 and 2 mapping before I joined the team.

 

I'm thinking about writing an article about the transition from Worldcraft/hammer to Darkradiant.

Congrats on the release of the First Official Fan Mission for Dark Mod. What a suprise, I don't think anyone saw it coming.

oooh, we should have a contest, whoever can make the coolest thiefsden fanmission will get... their face ingame, or can give a speech and that will be for some character in the game...........

Well well, this in a cool and interesting development. How should we handle this? Publicly announce a new "mini-map" that works with Thief's Den? Should I host the mission at Shadowdark as a "new mission"? At the very least I think it should wait for the updated performance version, smaller candle lights, visportals in the doorways, and anything else.

 

Will this only work with the (now outdated) Thief's Den resources? In other words, when the mod is released next year, will this little map no longer work? (What about Thief's Den itself at that point??)

Many of the resources would be out of date, like the def files and code. My guess is that the map files would probably just need some basic tweaks or renaming to work with the full mod, however.

      Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

      I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.
